Summary
The lives of the Fulakunda center around their herds of cattle or sheep, and a person's wealth is measured by how many head of livestock he owns. Although they may lack a scholarly grasp of book knowledge, they are considered skilled social analysts. Some Fulakunda elders have traveled in many countries and know the language, people, and culture of each. The Fulakunda are a Muslim people, and adhere strongly to the tenets of their religion.
Obstacles
Foreign Christians sometimes confuse their own culture with the Bible and bring their (western) culture instead of bringing God's Kingdom's life in Jesus.
How reach
Christians from other West African countries may be able to help disciple the believers in Christ among the Fulakunda, as well as introduce other Fulakunda people to Christ. Pray for African Christian tribal workers to become available. Senegal is generally open to Christian workers.
Pray for church
There are only a handful of followers of Jesus among the Fulakunda tribe, and they very much need prayer support from outsiders. Pray they won't waver in their commitment to Christ. Pray they in all things will grow up into him who is the Head, Christ. Pray for workers needed to sow God's Word into Fulani families, healing and strengthening households with God's blessings.
Pray for p g
Pray the Fulakunda people who know God will become wise in sowing the Word of God among their families and multiplying the blessings of God to other Fulakunda households. Pray they will be able to prepare their children for the rapidly changing conditions of the modern world. Pray they will make schooling a priority, and that good schools will be available.

Summary
All over West Africa, the Maninka (formerly a trading people) have become powerful merchants, civil servants and religious leaders. In Senegal, they base their livelihood on agriculture and some animal husbandry. Maninka men sometimes set up or work for small, part-time businesses to supplement their incomes. Their houses are grouped according to family ties, with each extended family occupying a compound. The Maninka have many elaborate ceremonies associated with the different societies and initiation rites of their culture.
Obstacles
Sunni Islam blended with traditional beliefs (like magic and worshiping the spirits of the land) dominates the Maninka religious worldview. People often first pray in the village mosque, then sacrifice a chicken to the village spirit. Many of the Maninka consult marabouts (Muslim holy men) for healing, protective amulets or insight into the future. Although some Christian resources are available to them, the Maninka seem extremely devoted to their traditional beliefs.
How reach
Griots (praise singers) are important members of society because they are responsible for passing down the oral traditions and cultural heritage of the Maninka. Perhaps griots can meet Jesus and sing a new praise song.
Pray for p g
Pray that God would send loving, long-term laborers. Ask the Lord to bring forth a vigorous Maninka church that will lead a movement to Christ.

Summary
Most Fuuta Torro call Senegal home. As rural people, they excel at farming, fishing and animal husbandry. They divide society into four main social classes, each with twelve castes. The Pulaar proudly acknowledge themselves as the first black Africans to convert to Islam although spiritism and magic play a significant role in daily life. They also believe themselves to be defenders of the Muslim faith. Islamic tradition, as well as the climate, influences clothing styles and other lifestyles.
Obstacles
These people have a strong commitment to their current faith and have not been open to the gospel.
How reach
Stories from Scripture, coupled with gospel films and recordings, would likely communicate effectively to the Pulaar, who remain mostly an oral culture. There is a need for sustained prayer for the Fuuta Torro.
Pray for church
Pray for the few hundred Fuuta Torro Christian believers and for others who will eventually find Christ. Pray also for discipling that leads to maturity for these believers and for rapid multiplication of home groups that leads to a strong movement to Christ.
Pray for p g
Pray for these people to increasingly understand that Jesus is deity, the Son of God. Pray they would desire to know him and follow him. Pray they would understand that salvation is found in no one else.

Summary
There are three divisions within Mandinka society: those who are free-born, the artisans, and the slaves. The free-born class originally consisted of Mandinka nobility. Today, it consists of farmers, merchants, Muslim clerics and others. The artisan class includes blacksmiths, leather workers, and griots (praise singers). Artisans are revered for their expertise and craft secrets, which involve spiritual rituals; therefore, they are looked upon with fear and awe. Griots are important members of society because they are responsible for passing down the oral traditions and cultural heritage of the Mandinka.
Obstacles
The Mandinka people are set in their ways; they are dedicated to Islam.
How reach
The Mandinka people in Senegal believe in upholding human dignity. They regard selfishness and a lack of hospitality are the two deadliest sins that defile this dignity. Those who bring the gospel to the Mandinka people in Senegal can start with these biblical values.
Pray for p g
Pray for the Lord to bless their harvests as a testimony of his sovereignty and goodness. Pray for Mandinka leaders to open the door to Christ's ambassadors. Pray for the Lord to thrust out Holy Spirit anointed workers among the Mandinka people in Senegal. Pray for disciples who will make more disciples among every Mandinka people.

Summary
The Lebou live in small fishing villages located along the coast of West Africa from Mauritania to Guinea. Their villages are sandwiched between the ocean and the desert. The Lebou people speak Wolof. However, they have their own distinctive dialect that sets them apart from the surrounding, and much larger, Wolof people group. Lebou society emphasizes piety and respect for elders. Lebou families include not only living people but also associated ancestral spirits. They are noted for their public exorcism dances and rituals, often attended by tourists. The Lebou people love to smile and are quick with a joke or a prank.
Obstacles
The current belief system of the Lebou is a mixture of Islam and traditional African religion. The Lord's Spirit needs to bring light into this spiritual confusion.
How reach
Please pray for workers ministering to the spiritual needs of the Lebou. May the Lord give them wisdom how to do this effectively. Pray for their encouragement and perseverance.
Pray for church
Please pray for the Lebou who identify themselves as Christians, that they will learn to live holy and joyfully obedient lives. Pray the Lord will use them to communicate the gospel message to family and friends.
Pray for p g
Pray for protection for the Lebou fishermen as they ply their trade in the ocean, and pray for improved health care facilities for the people.

Summary
The livelihood of the Fulbe is primarily based on farming and shepherding. Gathering forest produce, hunting, fishing, and trading are also part of their daily lives. Staple crops include millet, rice, and peanuts. Cattle herds, along with sheep and goats, are the primary livestock. The cattle are not the usual Fulani "humped" breed, but a native Fouta Djallon breed that is resistant to the disease-carrying tsetse fly. Herding cattle is usually a male activity; however, the women milk and take care of the cattle. Women also care for the poultry and small livestock, as well as cultivate the gardens. Women often carry containers of milk and cheese to sell or trade in local markets.
Obstacles
Efforts to evangelize these people have resulted in only a very small number of Fulbe believers. They are very devoted to their Islamic religion and see it as a fulfillment of their needs.
How reach
It will take consistent prayer before spiritual blinders are removed. Who will begin a prayer movement for the Fulbe?
Pray for p g
Ask God to raise up prayer teams who will begin breaking up the soil through worship and intercession. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send full-time missionaries to share the gospel with the Fulbe of Senegal. Pray for effectiveness of the JESUS Film among the Fulbe throughout Africa. Pray that God will give the small number of Fulbe believers boldness to start a movement to Christ within their community. Ask the Lord to bring forth a strong and growing church among the Fulbe.

Summary
The Ganja Balanta people have lived in southern Senegal since the 1800s, while some also live in Guinea Bissau. The Balanta have a council of elders who make the decisions for the community. They speak Balanta and Krio and work as fishermen and herders. The Ganja Balanta follow both animism and Islam. They believe that God is far away, uninvolved in their lives.
Obstacles
Sharing the gospel is difficult for any Muslim majority people.
How reach
There are believers among the Ganja Balanta.
Pray for church
Pray the Holy Spirit would work in their lives, so they would honor Christ in their daily interactions. Pray Christ followers would rise up to boldly share Christ's love with their neighbors and families. Pray for courage for the believers among the Ganja Balanta.
Pray for p g
Pray that the council of elders would come to Jesus Christ and lead others to him. Pray God would give them dreams and visions, leading to salvation and holiness. Pray for the God of power to provide abundance for the Ganja Balanta people as a testimony of his mercy and power.

Summary
Most of the Bambara in Senegal are farmers. Their staple crop is millet, although sorghum and groundnuts are produced in large quantities. They also grow maize, tobacco, cassava, and various other vegetables in private gardens. Unfortunately, drought and other ecological problems have hurt the farmers in recent years.
Obstacles
As Muslims, the Bambaras are taught that there is a perfect way other than the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
How reach
There are believers in West Africa who can tell the stories of Jesus through music, dance and drama in such a way that the Bambaras would be willing to listen. There are also gospel recordings and the JESUS Film that can be made available to Bambara leaders.
Pray for church
Pray that those who follow Christ among the Bambaras will allow the Holy Spirit to direct their lives. Pray that they will demonstrate the fruit and the power of the Holy Spirit in such a way that their Muslim neighbors will understand that Jesus Christ offers a better way.
Pray for p g
Pray for believers to establish schools for Bambara children, so they can be prepared for the challenges ahead.

Summary
Moorish society is primarily nomadic and is organized into successive ranks of tribes, clans, sub-clans and tent units. Several tribes form a tribal alliance. The Moors who live in various parts of Africa are primarily farmers. However, the Black and White Moors of Senegal are relatively urbanized and work in various trades. This has caused the traditional structures of Moorish society to change considerably. Even though slavery is now against the law, it continues to be a fundamental part of the social and economic structure of Moorish society.
Obstacles
The Moors are a very proud people, conveying a sense of superiority to others in the area. The Moors of Senegal are virtually all Sunni (orthodox) Muslims. Pride and dependence on one's own works are two barriers to the gospel of grace.
How reach
Unfortunately, there has been little response to the gospel among the Moors. Prayer is the key to seeing them reached for Jesus Christ.
Pray for church
Pray for the first Moors to accept Christ in Senegal this decade!
Pray for p g
Pray for an abundant harvest among the Moors in Senegal this year as a testimony of his goodness and power. Pray for spiritual hunger among the Moors, especially among their leaders and decision-makers. Pray for the Holy Spirit to thrust out faithful workers to the Moors in Senegal.

Summary
The Jahanka people claim to be descendants of a great 15th century West African cleric. Their Muslim tradition avoids the notion of jihad (holy war) in favor of pacifism, and they feel no need to convert others to Islam. Even so, they are almost 100 percent Muslim as a people.
Obstacles
Pride in a person's knowledge often is a stumbling block to simple faith in the finished work of Christ. Jahanka beliefs are best characterized by a staunch dedication to Islam, historical accuracy, rejection of jihad, non-involvement in political affairs, and the religious instruction of young people. There is an indication there are a few followers of Jesus among the Jahanka, although there is no evidence of a church or gathering among them.
How reach
Only gospel recordings exist in the language of the Jahanka. Workers need to take this resource to the people. Conversions among them would greatly impact the general Muslim community in Senegal. Specifically the religious teachers of their communities need to be targeted for outreach. Perhaps Christian educators and professionals who could present the gospel in culturally relevant ways would be one avenue to reach the Jahanka.
Pray for church
Pray that the few followers of Christ among this important people group will be filled with the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and be used of Him to begin to disciple those who are spiritually hungry.
Pray for p g
Pray the religious Jahanka people will increasingly be drawn to Jesus (whom Muslims call Isa al-Masih), and will have a growing desire to find out more about this man. Pray this desire will be satisfied. Ask the Lord to save key leaders among the Jahanka people who will boldly declare the gospel and disciple others. Pray for the Holy Spirit to birth a cascading discipleship movement among the Jahanka people in Senegal for God's glory.

Summary
Family is very important in Susu society, and Susu often live as extended families. Although good social relationships are valued, there are often conflicts with neighbors. Although Western clothes can be obtained in the markets, most Susu women seem to prefer African dress. The Susu are strongly Muslim but combine their Islamic faith with traditional beliefs, such as the existence of spirits who inhabit certain areas, and the belief in sorcerers who have the power to change into animals, cast evil spells on people, or heal people from ailments.
Obstacles
The Muslim Susu honor Jesus as a prophet but not as the Son of God.
How reach
The New Testament is available in the Susu language, as are other good resources such as the Jesus film. Pray for workers to take these to the people.
Pray for church
There may be a handful of Christians among the Susu of Senegal. Pray for these and those who will soon join their numbers. Pray they live holy lives, and learn to walk in the power of God's Spirit.
Pray for p g
Pray for improved medical facilities, and for clean drinking water for the Susu people.

Summary
Once a trade-based people, the Maninka have become a highly influential people, taking roles as powerful merchants and leaders in both civic and religious arenas. The roots of Maninka greatness and expansion can be traced back to the once great Mali Empire and the independence the Maninka gained in 1235. Many Maninka states and kingdoms were established as they migrated, and many settled in Senegal. The Maninka are agricultural, though they also hunt and raise livestock. Their houses are grouped into compounds according to family ties, but recent trends have slightly weakened the extended family unit. Though they are Islamic, they have retained many of their traditional beliefs and often consult holy men for healing or insight into the future.
Obstacles
Christian resources are available to the Maninka, but they are extremely devoted to their own beliefs and do not see the need to depend on a Savior.
How reach
The symbolism of Christian ceremonies might interest the Maninka. Also, they seem interested in the supernatural. Stories of the miracles of Jesus might interest them, as well as demonstrations of the power of the Holy Spirit within their own villages. Believers can take stories, skits and songs to them.
Pray for p g
Pray that God would bless their villages and their labors. Pray that they would receive the invitation to become adopted into his family and that those who respond would gather others as well.

Summary
In the modern Arab world, traditional values have been altered for most Arab groups. This can be attributed to the pressure to urbanize, industrialize and de-tribalize. However, many of the Saharan Arabs still live as desert shepherds no matter where they live. The Arabs migrated hundreds of years ago from the Middle East into North Africa, and from there many of them live in various parts of sub-Saharan Africa like Mali and Senegal. The Saharan Arabs of Mali are still mostly nomads. They are livestock herders who live in tents. They move their herds to the desert during the rainy season and move out of the desert during the summer. Food consists of yogurt, made from camel and goat milk. Bread and dates are their regular food. Clothes tend to be light weight and loose fitting.
Obstacles
Their lack of Christian believers keep the Saharan Arabs in spiritual darkness.
How reach
There were once Muslim missionaries who took Islam to these desert nomads. There is no reason why Christ followers cannot do the same.
Pray for p g
Pray for God to send abundant rain to the Saharan Desert as a testimony to the Arabs of his goodness and sovereignty. Ask God to open the hearts of the Saharan Arabs in Senegal to the message of salvation. Pray for faithful workers to take the message of salvation to the Saharan Arabs. Pray for the formation of Bible believing fellowships among the Saharan Arabs of Senegal.

Summary
The Jola-Gusilay live in extended family compounds, each consisting of a cluster of huts that are arranged in a circle around an open space. Often the entire compound is surrounded by a fence, hedge, or wall. The compounds usually adjoin to form compact villages. In general, the dwellings are round with mud walls and cone-shaped, thatched roofs. Chiefs exercise political authority in the villages. Succession usually passes to the next brother, or to the oldest son of the deceased chief's oldest sister. The Jola-Gusilay prefer cousins as marriage partners. The husband to be's family pays a bride-price in livestock, and her family requires him to work for them before the marriage.
Obstacles
There are almost no Christian materials in the language of the Jola-Gusilay. They are Muslims living in a Muslim land with no one to challenge their beliefs.
How reach
Christ followers can regularly and fervently pray for these Muslims.
Pray for p g
Pray for an abundant harvest this year for the Jola-Gusilay as a testimony of God's goodness and power. Pray for spiritual openness to the one who is the way, the truth and the life. Pray for an unstoppable movement to Christ among the Jola-Gusilay people. Pray for Jola-Gusilay leaders to welcome those who come bearing the name of the only Savior.

Summary
Jola peoples like the Jola-Her are excellent farmers. In the 1880s they were engaged in palm wine tapping, and by 1900 they were more likely to be found growing peanuts as a cash crop. They also grew sweet potatoes, watermelon, and rice, while some raised cattle and other livestock. There was a great market for their products during WWII.
Obstacles
Fear of the spirit world and a suspicion that putting faith in Christ will alienate them from their communities are two major obstacles.
How reach
African believers can fan out into Jola communities to do skits and sing songs that teach the ways of Christ. They can leave people with gospel recordings and the JESUS Film so they can remember the message.
Pray for church
Pray that believers among the Jola-Her people of Senegal will walk as Jesus walked, and live by the Holy Spirit, so that their friends, neighbors and family members can see living Christianity in action.
Pray for p g
Pray that the Jola-Her people will have the opportunity to use their excellent farming skills to earn a good living and allow their children the chance to get higher education.

Summary
Historically, the Khasonke of Senegal date to the early 13th century. With the introduction of maize and peanuts, their agriculture changed, as these crops came to dominate their cultivation. Some may raise cattle and sheep or tend orchards. Some Khasonke also live in cities where social classes are less significant than in rural settings. Religiously, they are nearly all Muslim. Their Islam is folk Islam, blended with traditional religion. Some are Christians and the New Testament is available in their language. Others adhere to their traditional religion without an Islamic influence.
Obstacles
The primary obstacles are the lack of outreach and Islam's historic resistance to Christianity.
How reach
Sharing stories from the Gospels may be effective. Culturally appropriate music is a key to the heart.
Pray for church
Pray that the churches would have a vision for outreach. Pray for them to be empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Pray for p g
Pray that God would prepare them to receive the gospel with open minds, wills and hearts. Pray for the Lord to thrust out his anointed and prepared workers to take Christ to the Khasonke community. Pray for entire Khasonke families to worship the King together.

Summary
If you live in the United States, you likely know some descendants of the Jola-Mlomp people, many of whom were taken as slaves during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Their most common crops in Senegal include sweet potatoes, watermelon and rice. They raise livestock, such as cattle.
Obstacles
Many of the Jola-Mlomp use charms and sacred objects in a vain attempt to find protection. This can be an obstacle to sharing the gospel with them.
How reach
African believers can fan out into Jola-Mlomp communities to do culturally appropriate skits and sing songs to share the teachings of Christ. They can distribute gospel recordings and the JESUS Film.
Pray for church
There is a small percentage of believers among the Jola-Mlomp. Pray for courage, love and a desire to share the gospel. Pray for Jola communities to be transformed by the holiness of Christ in a way that will amaze nonbelievers.
Pray for p g
Pray that fear of the spirits would give way to faith in Christ when the Jola peoples hear of the finished work of our Lord. Pray that the Lord would raise up many African believers to go to the Jola peoples with the exciting news that Jesus Christ offers abundant life for the here and now and eternal life. Pray for discipleship to become a way of life for them.

Summary
The Budik people constitute an ethnic group that lives apart from society. One seldom meets a Budik in political meetings or other popular gatherings. Budik girls' unique hair styles are characterized by one big plait on top of the head and several small plaits on the side. The Budik people are very respectful to their elders. In Budik society, the elders are always given first priority. The Budik traditionally believe in dialants, a heap of small stones near a wall or tree, where sacrifices are made and prayers are said regularly. Few Budik are Muslim. When asked why, they reply that the main reason is the dominant presence of Fulbe people in Islam. The Budik and Fulbe peoples do not get along, because the cows, sheep, and goats of the Fulbe graze in and trample the fields of the Budik farmers.
Obstacles
The literacy rate is very low among this tribe.
How reach
Perhaps workers who know how to tell stories from scripture will come to the Budik tribe. Gospel recordings are available, and scripture portions have been translated. The Gospel needs to come primarily in oral form.
Pray for church
There are followers of Jesus today reported among the Budik tribe. Please pray for these, and for others who will soon come to saving faith in Christ, that they will learn to live in the power of God's Spirit, demonstrating love, joy, peace, and all the fruit of the Spirit. Pray also for steady progress in further translation of scripture.
Pray for p g
Pray the Budik people will live in peace with their neighbors, and will have access to clean water and adequate rainfall for their crops and herds.

Summary
Badyara people in Senegal are subsistence farmers. They practice female circumcision, a process that leaves girls vulnerable to infections. Parents do not allow a young couple to marry if they are suspected of loving each other. They believe that the man will lose his power over the woman if he loves her. Boys are circumcised at 8 years old and are then taken away from the village for about one month, during which time they are taught the ways of the people.
Obstacles
It will be hard to convince them that they need spiritual change in order to be in communion with the infinite and all-powerful God.
How reach
They believe that the spirits live in the rocks. Each house has a little jar filled with small rocks for protection and appeasement of the spirits. Gifted Christ followers can challenge these beliefs through power encounters that will prove his sovereignty over the physical and spiritual world.
Pray for p g
Pray for Badyara elders and leaders to open the door for their people to embrace Jesus Christ. Pray for the Lord to give the Badyara people an abundant harvest this year as proof of his power and love. Pray for the Lord to thrust out loving workers to the Badyara. Pray for a movement to Christ among the Badyara people that will lead them into spiritual and physical blessings.

Summary
In general, Berbers feel that the more powerful Arabs have tried to control them, though the two groups have often worked together throughout history. Berber groups like the Zenaga speakers would love to have complete freedom, but there are more powerful groups around. Those in Senegal might feel that the Wolof people hold too much power.
Obstacles
Zenaga speaking Berbers are 100 percent Muslim in Mauritania, a country that is almost completely Muslim as well. They have few if any chances to hear that Christ is the only one who can save sinner.
How reach
It is highly possible that Zenaga Berbers are not satisfied with their economic situation or the lack of good roads, potable water, or electricity. Believers with the right skills can go to their communities and help them develop in these areas.
Pray for church
There are no followers of Christ among the Zenaga Berbers, so pray for the Holy Spirit to move in their communities in the near future.
Pray for p g
Pray for opportunities for Zenaga speakers to hear and respond to Jesus Christ. Pray for a Disciple-Making movement to move through Zenega communities in both Mauritania and Senegal.
