Summary

The Watchi people of Togo are very poor. It is common for them to sell their children to work for families who have more money. When their children are in this position, they are very vulnerable to being over-worked, sexually exploited, and sent away empty-handed. Others work on farms, eating less than they need for their work.

Obstacles

Like other people groups in West Africa, the Watchis are fearful of leaving their devotion to spirits that have exploited them for centuries.

How reach

There needs to be a power encounter among the Watchi people that will show them that they should no longer waver between traditional religion and Christianity. The Lord needs to show them His power, mercy and love.

Summary

The Kotokoli live in the West African countries of Togo, Ghana and Benin. They emigrated from what is now Burkina Faso into the Sokode region during the 1600s and 1700s. In time, the Kotokoli developed a reputation for sharp and perhaps underhanded dealings in trade. Kotokolis are growing in numbers and in their social, economic and political impact. The Kotokoli are primarily farmers, growing sorghum and yams as their staple crops. Most of the Kotokoli live in houses that have round mud walls, with dirt floors and cone-shaped, thatched straw roofs. Kotokoli marriages are usually arranged by the parents while the boy and girl are still infants.

The Kotokoli are committed Muslims who are not open to spiritual conversations about salvation by grace.

Christian medical teams, aid workers and teachers may have the greatest opportunity to share the love of Jesus with the Kotokoli in practical ways.

Summary

The Togo Fulfulde (Fulani) are those Fulfulde living in the northern regions of Togo, who immigrated from Benin. They are Bororo, or largely nomadic herdsmen, who move their cattle and goats from place to place in search of new grazing land. Traditional dress of the Fula consists of long colorful flowing robes, modestly embroidered or otherwise decorated. Fulas are minorities in almost every country in which they live, so most also speak other languages besides their own in countries they inhabit. They are almost entirely Muslim.

Obstacles

The Fulani tribes have been strongly Muslim for generations.

How reach

There are many Christians in Togo, in other tribes. Pray some of these people will be given a heart to take the Gospel to the Fulfulde tribes. Pray they will do this boldly, but with much tact.

There are a few followers of Jesus among the Fulfulde of Togo, but not many. Pray for these and others who will soon join them to be accurately taught the ways of Christ. Pray they will rest fully in his completed work on the cross.

Summary

The Anufo trace their roots to an area in present-day Cote d 'Ivoire which they call Anou or Ano. Hence they refer to themselves and their language as Anufo "people of Anu". In the mid 1700s, a small band of mercenaries left Ano to assist the chiefs of the Gonja and Mamprusi peoples in present day Ghana, and this group formed the beginnings of the Anufo people. Since they were warriors and not farmers, they made their living by conducting raids into the farming communities around them. This provided them with wives and slaves as well as foodstuffs and livestock. There are about 20 Anufo villages in Togo, 113 in Ghana, and a few in Benin.

Christians who are Christian in name only often are a stumbling block to the advance of the Gospel. Pray for Anufo Christians to become real disciples of Jesus Christ.

Summary

Living only in central Togo, most Akasselem are Muslim, though there is a sizable minority that never left their traditional religion. They might go to the mosque, but the Akasselem regularly depend on traditional spirits rather than Allah for their needs. Less than two percent are Christian of any form. There are two levels: the elite and the common, defined by what they eat. They are heavily involved in agriculture, either consuming or selling what they produce. They only eat two meals a day, during which beer, gin, and sodabi (distilled palm wine) are considered essentials.

Obstacles

Islam is a strong deterrent to those who might otherwise seek and find answers in the Bible. Almost none of these Muslims have given Jesus a chance to transform their lives with his abundant blessings.

Pray for spiritual discernment and a deep hunger for God among the Akasselem. Ask God to send believers from other parts of Africa to share the gospel with the Akasselem through music, dance, and drama. Ask God for workers to follow up in discipleship groups after any evangelistic efforts.

Summary

The Hausa in West Africa have been heavily involved in long distance trading for centuries. Traders exchanged gold from the Middle East for leather, crafts, and food. The Hausa are the largest ethnic group in all of West Africa, as well as one of the most powerful. Their power is centered in Nigeria where they share power with the Fulani peoples. A much smaller number of them live in Togo.

Obstacles

Adequate Christian resources are available in the Hausa language; but they are still an unreached Muslim people group. The Hausa people need to see their critical need for the Savior, who loves them and desires a personal relationship with them. They need to see that they will not be accepted by the creator of the universe except through His son, Jesus Christ.

How reach

Believers can find tactful ways to give Hausa people gospel recordings and the JESUS Film that they can listen to in the privacy of their own homes.

Pray that the few Hausa believers will be so filled with the fruit and the power of the Holy Spirit that their Muslim neighbors will know that they have something everyone else needs.

Pray that they will see that their Islamic religion will not save them on the final day. Pray that the Holy Spirit will allow circumstances into the lives of these people that will point to their sinfulness and their need for the Savior. The Anii language has quite a number of dialects, and each village may speak its own dialect. There may be difficulty in understanding between these dialects. Benin has the largest population of Anii people, but there is also a sizable minority in Togo. There are about 18 villages of Anii in Benin, and four in Togo. Many of the villages developed somewhat in isolation from each other, hence the difficulties of understanding the different dialects. The

The Anii are Muslim. Churches in the area do not include people from the Anii tribe. Most likely the Anii are not seeing anyone living Christ's victorious life from within the Anii culture.

How would you feel if yours was a dying language like that of the Koussountou? Most likely, there would be no one to speak your language in 100 years. Would not this be a hard time if you spoke that language? There is almost no information about Koussountou speakers, but most people in their part of Africa, are either farmers or cattle herders. They need to adjust to merging with other people groups. Language and culture are key elements of people's identity, so this might be a hard time for those who speak this language.

Obstacles

Koussountou are mainly Muslim. Their form of Islam allows for them to put some of their faith in the spirits of their ancestors and spirit beings other than Allah, the God of Islam. A very small number are Christian.

Pray that the Koussountou will realize the need to put all their faith in the God of the Bible and Jesus Christ, the only Savior. Pray for African Christian believers to take gospel recordings and the JESUS Film to the Koussountou. Pray that this people group will have a spiritual hunger that will affect other people in their region. Pray for many to disciple others and in the ways of Christ. Pray that Christ will redeem their culture and language through Bible translation.

Summary

The Mamprusi are part of the Na Gweba people originally from what is now Togo. Of the four people groups descended from Na Gweba, the Mamprusi are the leaders. Most Mamprusi live in their homeland, Mamprugu, an area of northeast Ghana between the Dagbani in the south and Frafra in the north. There are also small communities of Mamprusi in towns in southern Ghana. Two-thirds of marriages are polygamous. Children are given both Mamprusi and Muslim names. Naa-wuni is the supreme god, and people communicate with their ancestors through sacrifices and offerings. The literacy rate among the Mamprusi is less than 15%.

Obstacles

The low literacy rate of the Mamprusi people is a major barrier to the Gospel if it comes only in written form.

How reach

Scripture is available in the Mampruli language, and audio recordings of the New Testament are available. The Jesus film and God's Story video are also available. Workers are needed to take these resources to the people.

Pray the Christian believers among the Mamprusi will regularly fellowship together, and that teachers and pastors will be sent to them, to teach and shepherd.

Summary

Very little is known about the Biali in particular. Nevertheless, historical accounts claim that they originated in Burkina Faso. Their farming methods are very basic, with the hoe being the primary tool. They rotate their crops and sometimes allow their fields to remain fallow. Hunting, fishing, and gathering (especially of shea nuts) provide only a modest supplement to the diet. Raising livestock is much more important to them. Marriages are usually arranged by the heads of two extended families, often while the girl is still an infant. Polygamy (a man having more than one wife) is permitted and occurs frequently. Usually, the first wife enjoys a superior status, but the other wives have their own separate quarters. The husband divides his time equally among all his wives.

Although missionaries have made considerable progress among this people group, many of the Biali have yet to hear a clear presentation of the gospel.
