Summary

For years, the Arabs have formed about 70% of the total population of Iraq. Most Shia Muslims in southern Iraq and the Sunnis live primarily in central Iraq. Social life is important to Arabs. They like to share a daily coffee time by sitting on the floor and drinking from cups without handles. Iraq also has a long Christian history. The Apostle Thomas brought Christianity to Mesopotamia. The ancient Christian Church has been a part of Iraqi culture since that time.

Obstacles

Iraq is presently in turmoil. This offers both obstacles and opportunities for the Iraqi Arabs to learn more fully of who Jesus truly is, but that will require believers to obey the Lord faithfully.

How reach

Iraqi Arabs need sustained prayer for understanding of the gospel. Gospel radio, television, Christian websites and personal witness are great tools to reach the hearts of Arabs in Iraq.

Pray for protection of the faith of Iraqi Arab believers and for their families. Pray the Lord would encourage them and give them fruit from his Spirit: love, joy and peace.

Summary

North Iraqi Arabs are incredibly diverse. Arabs are generally proud of their heritage, their mother tongue Arabic (or an Arabic dialect), and their culture of hospitality. The North Iraqi Arabs are very similar in language and culture to neighboring Arab populations.

Obstacles

While Islam and Christianity share many beliefs about God and historical figures, many Muslims view faith in Christ as a threat. Prayer and intercession are powerful tools that God can use to break down this barrier.

How reach

The JESUS Film is available in Arabic. This is a great resource to introduce Muslims to Jesus as God. The Church needs Jesus followers around the world to share the gospel in northern Iraq.

Summary

The Yazidis were persecuted along with other Kurds by Saddam Hussain. Their theology has been misunderstood by Muslims controlling them for centuries. They are scorned and despised as "devil worshippers," mostly because of their beliefs regarding the "Peacock Angel."

Obstacles

Yazidi are a Kurdish people who follow an old religion related to Zoroastrianism, but which has remnants of Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Only the Holy Spirit can deal with such confusion produced by the mixture of satanic lies through dedica

Summary

The production of oil has also provided numerous jobs for the Persians in oil-rich countries like Iraq. In fact, many of the Persians who live abroad work in the oil industry. Urban Persians can be craftsmen, shop owners, merchants, real estate investors, and other commercial and industrial businessmen. Families are strictly male-dominated. The line of descent is traced through the father; property and inheritances are passed down through the males; and family and political rule belong to the men. Persian women are submissive to their husbands in public; however, they often hold a considerable amount of decision-making power in private.

Obstacles

Persians need their spiritual eyes will be opened. Some are staunch Shia Muslims while others are secularized. They need believers to take the glory of Christ to them.

There are vibrant Christ followers among the Persians in Iran who can take the gospel to Persians in Iraq.

Summary

The northeast border of Iraq is part of a larger Kurdish population of clans, tribes, and confederacies which have existed for thousands of years. They share several important and common ties of language, culture, homeland, and identity. They fought ISIS valiantly, and at great cost. They are farmers, raising cattle and goats, and a people who enjoy elaborate costumes, and bright colors.

Obstacles

Almost all Kurds are Sunni; class prejudice is common in this people group. Many of the most rebellious in Kurdish society have associated with secret and unorthodox Muslim sects.

How reach

Many Kurds have endured much suffering in recent years of war and rebellion, scarcity of water, and resultant farming problems. Medical teams and civil engineers, and educators are needed to minister to these needy people.

Summary

The Gurani are an Iranian ethnic group that consists of several sub-groups, including the Bajelani and the Hawrami. They live in the northern regions of Iran and Iraq in an area commonly known as Kurdistan, or “land of the Kurds.” For this reason, they are often categorized as Kurds. They farm and raise livestock as their chief occupations. They mainly grow wheat, barley, rye and oats. Additionally, they grow cotton, olives, rice, sugar beets and tobacco. During the summer months, the Gurani, like many other Kurds, take their sheep, goats, donkeys and mules to higher mountain pastures; winter grazing occurs in the lower plains.

Iranian Christ followers are almost all in urban centers and they speak Farsi, not Gurani.

Summary

The early 1600s brought about the founding of the Bajelani tribe. They were founded by Abdal Bey, an Ottoman military commander, and they helped him defeat the Persians in the Ottoman-Safavid War, 1623-39. By the 19th century they had completely surrendered their identity and became one of the Kurdish tribes. The Kurds have occupied Kurdistan since as early as 2400 B.C. Today the Bajelani are mainly farmers. The principal crops are grains. Other crops include cotton, olives, rice, sugar beets, and tobacco. During the summer months, the Bajelani take their livestock to higher mountain pastures; winter grazing occurs in the lower plains.

Obstacles

The Bajelani people are either Sunni or Shia Muslim. Neither of these religious traditions are willing to accept the blood sacrifice of Jesus as payment for their sin.

There are some Kurdish people who have made professions of Christ. Some can go to the Bajelani people.

Summary

Marsh Arabs are inhabitants of the Tigris-Euphrates marshlands in the south and east of Iraq and along the Iranian border. They include many different tribes and tribal confederations. Many were displaced when the wetlands were drained during and after the 1991 uprisings in Iraq. Most Marsh Arabs are Shia Muslims but are said to also have some pre-Islamic and extra-Islamic beliefs.

Obstacles

Access to the marshes of Iraq is difficult, both because of the water and because of the turmoil in Iraq. These people have no concept of God who loves them and has provided the option for the penalty of their sins to be paid.

How reach

Gospel radio broadcasts would be strategic in this region.

Please pray for the availability of radio broadcasts, and that the people will learn about them and listen with understanding. Pray for any believers who may be in Iraq to reach out to the Marsh Arabs for the Lord. The marsh environment has meant that certain diseases, such as malaria, have been common. Farm fields and homes are vulnerable to periodic droughts and flooding. Please pray for protection from these dangers. Pray for Christ followers to help them with this serious need.

Summary

Gulf Arabs are those from the countries bordering the Persian Gulf: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The Arab states of the Persian Gulf share a regional culture that is sometimes referred to as "khaleeji (gulf) culture". They all speak Gulf Arabic and share similar music styles, cuisine, and dress. Most Arabs living near the Persian Gulf also trace their ancestry back to Arab tribes of either Najd (in what is now central Saudi Arabia) or Yemen. All the Arab States of the Persian Gulf have significant revenues from oil and gas and, with the exception of Saudi Arabia, have small local populations. Gulf Arabs today control much wealth.

Obstacles

Great wealth often lures people into a false sense of security, allowing them to think they don't need God.

How reach

Perhaps many Arabs of the Persian Gulf region will discover the availability on the internet of the Jesus film, scripture, and other resources in the Arabic language. Pray especially that youth will discover these and download them and view them.

Please pray for the few Gulf Arabs who identify themselves as Christians, and also for those followers of Christ who are secret believers. Pray they will find scripture and other resources which will lead them to a correct understanding of what it means to know and follow Christ.

Summary

Herki Kurds are part of a much greater Kurdish population. The Kurds are made up of a number of clans, tribes, and tribal confederations, many of which have been in existence for thousands of years. This large people group shares several important and common ties. Not only do they speak closely related languages, but they also share a common culture, geographical homeland, and sense of identity. Kurdish people are basically more alike than are other people groups, and they feel it. The Herki Kurds are a confederacy of tribes of Northern Kurdistan. They live primarily in the mountainous area where the borders of Turkey, Iran, and Iraq meet. The Herki language is possibly a dialect of Kurmanji, the largest Kurdish language.

Obstacles

There is such a small number of Herki Kurds who follow Christ that they will need outsiders to evangelize and disciple others.

How reach

There are strong Kurdish Christ followers in neighboring Iraq who can reach out to the Herki Kurds in Iraq.

Romani speakers call themselves Rom, which in their language means "men." Rom is derived from the Indian word Dom, meaning "a man of low caste who gains his livelihood by singing and dancing." Romani speaking people originated in India where their ancestors worked as musicians, entertainers and metal workers. It is common for Romani to have two or more specialized occupations. This makes it easier for them to adapt to a changing society's needs. When a region's people no longer need a Romani's particular skill, they move on to find another community that needs their skills, be it metal working, entertainment or whatever.

The Islamic religion is very difficult to influence.

How reach

The quality of health care, nutrition, housing, and education is poor, especially those who live in refugee camps. Believers with the right skills could be a blessing to the Romani by providing medical needs.

Summary

The Mandaeans are descendants of Jewish-Christian Gnostics (AD 150), and may be the only sect from late antiquity to identify themselves as Gnostics. Sometimes Mandaeans are called Christians of Saint John. Until recently, Mandaeans lived mainly in Iraq and Iran, but many have now fled Iraq and settled in other countries. "A very strange and singular people, in terms of their rituals, lives in the desert near Baghdad....they are a very simple people and they claim to possess a secret law of God, which they preserve in beautiful books." Ricoldo da Montecroce, c 1290. Mandaeism is based more on a common heritage than on any set of religious creeds and doctrines. They venerate John the Baptist, and baptism is their central sacrament.

Obstacles

After centuries of isolation the Mandaeans are quite insular and protective of their society and their religion. Christian resources are limited in their mother tongue.

How reach

Mandaens now reside in some western countries, and access is easier than in the past. Christians should reach out to befriend these people, and find out more about their culture, their religion, and their world view. There are likely bridges to this people given their ancient roots in Christianity.

There likely are no Christian believers among the Mandaeans, but pray those who will soon find Christ will be able to clearly understand the Good News of Christ, especially the grace He offers.

Summary

Though the Chechens in Iraq are small in number, they have been there since the late 1800s when they settled there on behalf of the Ottoman Empire. These Chechens settled in Iraq's northern towns. Later Chechen communities settled in Mosul, Dayali, and Baghdad. At that time many of these Chechens left their farms and became soldiers. There is a hot dispute about whether or not there are more recently arriving Chechens who are there to fight in Iraq's extended war. There are now efforts on the part of the Chechens in Iraq to re-build their fallen community organizations and language teaching schools. Re-building their cultural establishments is unlikely until there is peace in Iraq.

Obstacles

For hundreds of years the Chechens have learned to fight for everything. The devastating war in Iraq will make it very difficult for these people to find the true spirituality that comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ.

How reach

Many Chechens are Sufi Muslims. There are aspects of Sufi Islam that are redeemable for those who are sharing Christ. Sufi Muslims understand better than either Sunnis or Shi 'ites the importance of having a relationship with the creator.

There are no followers of Christ among Chechens in Iraq to our knowledge. Pray for a movement to Christ among them.

Pray for the Chechens to find a peaceful home. Pray for the internal shalom for Chechens as they find their way to the Prince of Peace. Pray that the fighting done in the name of Islam will give Chechens in Iraq and in Russia the willingness to seek spiritual answers outside their religious system. Pray for dreams and visions that will lead Chechens on a spiritual quest. Pray for a movement to Christ among Chechens in Iraq.
