Summary: The Hausa are the largest ethnic group in West Africa. They have been in Benin as far back as 1897. The Hausa people have been heavily involved in long distance trading for many centuries. Traders exchanged gold from the Middle East for leather, crafts, and food. There is inter-marriage between the Hausa community and the peoples of Benin. Marriages between the two communities are very common, so there might be social interaction between the Hausas and the local people.
Obstacles: The Hausas need to see past their worldly success and acceptance, and see that they will never be accepted by the creator of the universe except through His Son. They need to see their critical need for the Savior who loves them and desires a personal relationship with them.
How reach: Good opportunities for believers, who would qualify to be bi-vocational, lie within the areas of government and commerce. Relationships based on work, culture, and recreation will provide windows through which God's truth may be spoken.
Pray for church: It is never easy to live within an Islamic society, especially when one is not Muslim. Pray for those whom the Lord calls to reach out to the Hausa people to always act and speak in love. Pray that they will be encouraged from within the Hausa society as they seek ways to fit into daily activities of life.

Summary: Over the years, some of the Fulfulde have changed from being exclusively herdsmen, to part-time herdsmen, part-time farmers. Some have become educated and influential leaders in their communities. Today, they are grouped and named according to their dialect, location, and occupation. The Fulfulde of Benin occupy the northern and central regions of the country. They speak Fulfulde, a Niger-Congo language. The Borgu Fulfulde are one of the groups. They live in Benin and Togo.

Summary: Usually living in settlements of round, mud or thatched dwellings with straw roofs, the Dendi are located in the northernmost region of Benin. They mainly reside in settlements in the lush plains of the Niger River that contain many rice fields and garden plots. Villages farther from the river are surrounded by bush areas and cultivated fields. The Dendi are almost entirely Muslim. Though Islam introduced new elements into the Dendi culture, it left the underlying framework of customs and traditions virtually untouched. Spirit possession, magic, sorcery, ancestor worship and witchcraft remain vital components of the Dendi belief system.
Obstacles: The Dendi are very involved in their current beliefs and may not wish to change their way or ideas, making the growth of a church in their communities difficult.
Pray for p g: Pray for adequate rainfall to produce good crops and for improved health care. Pray for entire Dendi families to embrace Christ. Pray the Lord will send teachers to help the few Christ followers among the Dendi become firmly established on the truths of scripture and send pastors to shepherd them. Summary: The Watchi people of Benin are very poor. It is common for them to sell their children to work for families who have more money. When their children are in this position, they are very vulnerable to being over-worked, sexually exploited, and sent away empty-handed. Others work on farms, eating less than they need for their work.
Obstacles: Like other people groups in West Africa, the Watchis are fearful of leaving their devotion to spirits that have exploited them for centuries.
How reach: There needs to be a power encounter among the Watchi people that will show them that they should no longer waver between traditional religion, Islam and Christianity. The Lord needs to show them His power, mercy and love.
Pray for church: Pray that the few Watchi believers will have faith and joy that will draw others to give Jesus Christ a chance to transform their lives.

Summary: The Anii language has quite a number of dialects, and each village may speak its own dialect. There may be difficulty in understanding between these dialects. Benin has the largest population of Anii people, but there is also a sizable minority in Togo. There are about 18 villages of Anii in Benin, and four in Togo. Many of the villages developed somewhat in isolation from each other, hence the difficulties of understanding the different dialects. The
Obstacles: The Anii are Muslim. Churches in the area do not include people from the Anii tribe. Most likely the Anii are not seeing anyone living Christ's victorious life from within the Anii culture.

Summary: Seto is one of about 20 Gbe dialects spoken in West Africa, from Ghana to Nigeria. Seto Gbe refers to people who speak a specific dialect, not about an ethnic group. Benin was relatively peaceful until the rise of the transatlantic slave trade. Eventually, 15,000 slaves per year were snatched from the area around Benin as part of a trade between the European mainland, West Africa, and the colonies of the New World. Male slaves were especially prized, so eventually there were two adult women for every man left in Africa by the slave traders.
Obstacles: Women have little leisure time to deal with spiritual matters. Seto Gbe speakers are animistic. This means that they have put their faith in spirits that must be appeased and placated.
How reach: Believers can share the gospel with co-workers. There needs to be radio programs specifically for the women.
Pray for church: It is never easy for a believer to live within an animistic society since their festivals and other important events revolve around the spirit world. Pray for believers to find creative ways to honor their families and culture without compromising their witness. Pray for those called to reach Seto Gbe speakers to always act and speak in love.

Summary: The Foodo originated in Ghana. They immigrated to Benin and have been in the Semere region for at least 300 years. The Foodo are primarily farmers. They are a friendly people who are proud of their heritage. Many want to ensure that their language does not change due to surrounding influences. They feel they need written material in their language and opportunities for the people to learn to read and write. The Foodo are virtually all Sunni Muslim. However, a few traditional animistic practices still persist among some. Such practices are done in secret, since animists are looked down upon by the Foodo.
Obstacles: The literacy rate of these people is low. The Gospel of Christ needs to come in oral form, and eventually, in written form.
How reach: The Foodo desire to learn to read, and they desire more written materials in their language. This is an opportunity for literacy workers. Gospel recordings are available in their language, also.
Pray for church: Pray the few Christian believers among the Foodo will live holy lives, full of grace and truth. Pray they will seek ways to share the good news of Christ with family and friends.

Summary: Beginning in the 15th century, the Zerma-Songhai peoples made up an empire that controlled most of central and western Niger. The French arrived in the early 20th century, subjugating the Zerma and their neighbors under colonial rule. Though the Zerma are no longer part of a powerful empire, they remain a proud people, resistant to change.
Obstacles: Although there appears to be a strict adherence to Islam on the surface, many Zerma also incorporate animistic practices into their daily life resulting in a type of folk Islam which brings more spiritual baggage. Only about 10 percent of the Zerma are literate, so those who take them the gospel will need to rely on non-printed materials.
How reach: Today half of the Zerma population is under the age of 15 due to increasing birthrates and decreasing infant mortality rates. Children are much more spiritually open than their elders, so it would be a good idea for believers to reach out to them. Since only ten percent of Zerma people are literate, pray that gospel recordings, audio Bibles, and radio broadcasts will become widely available to the Zerma people.
Pray for church: Pray that the small number of Zerma believers will be moved by the Holy Spirit to reach their own people.
Pray for p g: Pray for a movement of the Holy Spirit through this unreached people group, that new believers will be discipled, and will disciple others. Pray that strong churches will be planted, and more will grow from existing ones. Pray for Zerma believers in Benin to be adequately discipled and sent out.

Summary: Mandinka villages are fairly autonomous and self-ruled, being led by a chief and group of elders. Mandinkas live in an oral society. Learning is traditionally done through stories, songs, and proverbs. Western education's impact has been minimal. However, more than half the adult population can read the local Arabic script. During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries as many as a third of the Mandinka population were shipped to the Americas as slaves. A significant portion of the African-Americans in the United States are descended from the Mandinka people. The majority of the Mandinka were still animists at the beginning of the 18th century, but today most practice Islam mixed with traditional beliefs.
Obstacles: Workers should remember that the Mandinka are an oral society and oral means of communicating will likely be most effective.
How reach: The full Bible and many other Gospel resources are available in the language of the Mandinka. Workers are needed to take these to the people.
Pray for church: Pray the few followers of Christ among the Mandinka will hate what is evil and cling to what is good. Pray they will be sent teachers to instruct them, especially using oral methods.

Summary: Toli is one of about 20 Gbe dialects spoken in West Africa, from Ghana to Nigeria. Toli Gbe refers to people who speak a specific dialect, not about an ethnic group.
Obstacles: Toli Gbe speakers are animistic. This means that they believe there are many spirits in the world that must be appeased and placated. Summary: The Kyanga in the Joshua Project database are confined to those who speak the Kyanga language. However, there is a large number of ethnic Kyanga who speak other languages. There may be as many as 200,000 ethnic Kyanga. Many are bi-lingual, especially with the Hausa language. There are four clans of Kyanga, which can be distinguished by body markings such as facial scars.
Obstacles: Animism and Islam both offer different foundations than Jesus Christ, the true foundation.
How reach: Benin has many evangelical Christians. Please pray for a missionary heart to continue to develop in these believers, and for a vision to carry the gospel to Muslim people groups such as the Kyanga.
Pray for church: There are few followers of Jesus today among the Kyanga people, but it's not too early to pray for those who will soon come to saving faith in Christ. They will need mature believers to help them become real disciples of Christ.
Pray for p g: Pray the Muslim and animist Kyanga will be given a growing interest in Jesus. Pray especially for the imams, that the Lord will draw them to the name of Jesus (whom Muslims call Isa al-Masih) as they study the Koran. Perhaps the Lord will give some visions or dreams of Himself.
