- The population of Eritrea is equally divided between Christian (Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Lutheran Protestants) and Muslim religions. The largest Muslim group is the Tigre, the only Eritrean or Ethiopian Semitic people which is not Orthodox. They are related to the Christian Tigrinya but are culturally distant from them.

- Cultural barriers are high. These can be overcome, but it usually requires much time.

- Pray the Tigre would have sufficient food in an area that often experiences famine. Pray for rain and for improved living conditions. Pray for Tigre believers to become effective and fruitful in sowing God's word among their own families and communities to fuel a movement of God's blessings spreading from household to household. The few Tigre believers live in trying circumstances among their Muslim family and friends. Pray for them to be empowered by the Holy Spirit when they face opposition.

- The Afar are a nomadic, Muslim people who live Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti in northeast Africa. They reside and work in one of the harshest, most desolate deserts in the world. The Afar take care of goats, camels, sheep and cattle. A man's wealth is measured by how many animals he owns. After a 30-year war, Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993. However, independence has not brought peace. There has been constant warfare between different ethnic groups in Ethiopia and Eritrea. As rainfall is sporadic, famine is common among the Afar.

- Islam is an integral part of Afar culture. To become a follower of Christ will bring persecution from one's family and community. Ministry to nomadic peoples is particularly difficult.

- Medical and veterinary teams can bring modern medicine to the Afar and their animals.

- A tiny church exists among the Afar. Pray that the Lord would protect his Afar church and cause them to share the gospel with their family and neighbors.

- What is the largest non-Arabic ethnic group between the Nile River and the Red Sea? The Bejas! One subgroup, the Hedareb, are nomadic shepherds who live in the desert regions of Sudan, Egypt and Eritrea. The Lord can raise up missionaries who are willing to go to the Beja and invest their lives to seeing Christ honored among these nomads. The Hedareb Beja can also encounter the gospel online and through radio. Many believe the Beja are descendants of Noah's grandson, Cush. They have occupied their current homeland for more than 4,000 years. During this time, they have adopted Islam and mixed it with folk religion.

- They are scattered over more than 110,000 square miles. This makes it hard to reach all of them.
- Pray for p g
- Ask God to reveal himself to the Beja and set them free from the belief that they can please God without the sin-free savior. Pray for a movement to Christ among the Beja peoples. There are no known Hedareb Beja believers. Pray for God to establish his church among this people group soon. Pray for the Lord to thrust out determined ambassadors of Christ to these nomads.

- The Nara live north of the Gash River in southwestern Eritrea. In the past, the Nara were one of the Sudanic tribes that were raided for slaves by other peoples. Ancient records refer to the Nara. Both an inscription in the fourth century and an Arab traveler's log in the ninth century document the location of the Nara.

- The Rashaida are a Bedouin people, who populate either side of the Red Sea and came from a major tribe in mainland Arabia about 150 years ago. They are a nomadic people who live in tents made of goatskin, and they are herdsmen, raising primarily goats and sheep. Since many do not read, they memorize in great detail the pedigree of their animals, keeping mental records of their herds over seven or eight preceding generations of the flock.

- The gospel message needs to come to these people orally, using stories from Scripture, videos, recordings and similar means. Bridges of friendship need to be built.

- How would you like to live in a land labeled as "horrible?" The Dahalik Islands in the Red Sea get their name from the Arabic words meaning horrible place. It was only in 1996 that linguists determined that the Dahalik had a separate language from the nearby Afar people. The Dahalik make their living by fishing and by herding goats and camels. On a positive note, the clear, warm waters off the islands offer some of the best scuba diving in the world.
- Obstacles
- There are few if any believers among the Dahaliks. Being Muslim is part of the Dahahlik personal and corporate identity. Dahalik is an unwritten language and no Bible resources are currently available in Dahalik.
- How reach
- Linguists can produce an alphabet for Dahalik and teach the people how to read and write it. Most of the Dahalik people speak either Arabic or Afar. The JESUS Film is available in both languages.
- Pray for p g
- Ask the Lord to send workers to the Dahalik to share the good news with them. Pray the Lord would lead linguists to produce a written Dahalik script and that gospel resources would be created for Dahalik. Pray for just and lasting peace in Eritrea and Ethiopia as ethnic violence plagues the region.
