Summary
The Hausa is the largest ethnic group in Niger and one of the most influential groups in West Africa. Nearly one out of every two Nigeriens is Hausa. The majority have been Sunni Muslim since the 11th century. In addition to Islam, many continue to practice their traditional religion, called Maguzawa, especially in remote locations. Hausa Muslims are known for being hospitable to strangers. In the Hausa language, one word, bako, is used to define both "guest" and "stranger".
Obstacles
Long-held traditional beliefs present a challenge to the spread of the gospel among the Hausa. Additionally, the perception that Christianity breaks up families and promotes many social problems is a serious obstacle to Hausa families and communities humbly accepting God's blessing for their families through Jesus.
How reach
There are a number of Hausa believers. Pray that they would be trained to engage their families and community in discovering and experiencing God's blessing through sharing and discussing Bible stories.
Pray for church
Pray for Hausa believers to be obedient to the call to make Jesus known.
Pray for p g
Pray for a movement to Jesus to multiply among Hausa families and communities.

Summary
The Zarma are farmers who use simple tools; they do not have access to modern farming equipment. They live in the Sahel Desert in Niger and surrounding countries, which makes farming very difficult. Some are fishermen, businessmen or teachers. They have little time for leisure activities.
Obstacles
Though Islam was introduced to them by outsiders, the Zarma have embraced it as their own. They believe that the Bible is unreliable and that they can only trust the Koran. This closes them to Jesus, who is the truth.
How reach
The Zarma are considered part of the larger Songhai cluster of peoples. The two groups treat each other as cousins and frequently intermarry, so gospel efforts among one can be used for the other. If they heard the teachings of the Bible, some would be drawn to it and the God who gave truth to mankind.
Pray for p g
Pray for the Lord to thrust out workers to the Zarma people in Niger this decade. Pray for the Lord to show himself loving and powerful by providing adequate rain for the Zarma people, who live in a dry land. Pray for spiritual hunger and openness to the teachings and ways of Jesus Christ.

Summary
An industrious people, the Maouri Hausa people of the Maouri Valley in Niger are farmers and traders who have long resisted Islam in favor of traditional African religion. Some have become believers in Jesus. This is very unusual for any Hausa subgroup. Some speak both Hausa and Zarma (Djerma).
Obstacles
Obstacles include historic resistance to monotheism (a belief in one god) and memories of colonialism, which many equate with Christianity.
How reach
The Bible is available in Hausa and Zarma; the JESUS Film is available in Hausa, as is Christian literature. African or Chinese evangelists can take these resources to the Maouri Hausa people.
Pray for church
Pray that the few believers would grow in grace and witness. Pray that African churches would adopt the Maouri Hausa for evangelization and church planting.
Pray for p g
Pray for the Maouri Hausa to be drawn to the person of Jesus Christ. Pray for them to have easy access to the JESUS Film and other resources. Pray that the presentation of Jesus would draw the Maouri Hausa to believe in him and spontaneously form their own discipleship groups.

Summary
The Sokoto Fulani, who are a subgroup of the greater Fulani tribe, are on the border of Niger and Nigeria. The Sokoto comprise the ruling class (Toroobe) as well as semi-nomadic shepherds (Bororo). The ruling class live in towns and cities, are educated, and fill leadership positions at the municipal and state level.
Obstacles
The Fulani believe that to be a Fulani is to be a Muslim. Many Fulani are revered teachers of Islam, who get much respect for their Islamic pedigree. Some are participating in jihads (holy wars) in an effort to eradicate Christian people from their midst, which adds a layer of enmity with believers.
How reach
Polluted water is a problem for the Sokoto Fulani, who suffer from malaria and other water-carried diseases. Missionaries and engineers might be welcomed in their efforts to make water potable in overpopulated cities. Because many Sokoto Fulani are among the ruling class, they would be in a position to influence their constituency to consider the claims of Christ.
Pray for p g
2 Timothy 2:21 says, "Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work." (ESV) Pray that the Sokoto Fulani would become "useful" to the one true Holy God. Pray that this would be the decade when the Sokoto Fulani have an unstoppable movement to Christ.

Summary
The Fulani in western Niger are descendants of clans that originated either in northern Senegal or Macina (Mali). There are vestiges of various castes among some Fulani groups. Some are nobles, some religious teachers, some come from the class of tradesmen and diplomats, and some are herders, hunters or blacksmiths. Fulani culture places a high value on self-control and on a certain stoicism which does not allow any demonstration of weakness. Their customs have changed little in hundreds of years, and they desire to maintain their traditional culture. The Western Fulani are expected to follow a code of high moral behavior. They are overwhelmingly Muslim; however, their traditional pre-Islamic rituals and beliefs are still followed today.
Obstacles
The Fulani are a dominant group in west Africa, strongly Muslim for generations, and they are committed to retain their religion.
How reach
Workers should emphasize the person of Jesus as they talk to the Fulani. Jesus is an honored prophet in Islam. Muslims need to learn more about Jesus as the Son of God.
Pray for church
The Lord is moving among Fulani peoples, and there are a few followers of Jesus among the Western Fulani of Niger. Please pray helpers will be sent to them so they will become firmly established as strong followers of Jesus Christ. Pray they will be zealous to know and follow Christ.
Pray for p g
Please pray for pure drinking water for the Fulani of Niger, and for improved medical care.

Summary
The West Niger Fulani live in small family units in temporary homes. A family's wealth is determined by the number of cattle owned. They are gradually losing their traditional grazing land, and they roam the savannah to find grass and water for their cattle while trying to avoid harmful insects. Due to their semi-nomadic lifestyle, most West Fulani children do not attend school. Children spend their days working to support their families. Girls marry young through family-arranged marriages. Local governments are encouraging the West Niger Fulani to settle in one place and take up agriculture. There are oral and visual gospel materials such as the JESUS Film that can be distributed to the West Niger Fulani.
Obstacles
With few, if any, Christ followers within the West Niger Fulani community, they must hear the gospel from outsiders. Missionaries are reluctant to live in their dry, scorched land.
Pray for p g
Pray for the Lord to bless the West Niger Fulani with abundant rain for their cattle and crops as a testimony of his goodness, mercy and sovereignty. Ask God to save key West Niger Fulani leaders who will share the love of Jesus with their own people. Pray for disciples who will make more disciples among the West Niger Fulani.

Summary
There are many Tuareg subgroups, including the Air Tuareg, named after their homeland in the Air Mountains. This area is part of the Sahel Desert, but the location is relatively wet, with enough water to sustain small herds. Though the Tuareg are known for being fierce desert warriors, the Air Tuareg hold a public festival which they open to outsiders. The festival features cultural events, camel rides and a market for locally made goods.
Obstacles
The Air Tuareg are a proud people. It will be hard for them to humbly accept that they are sinners in desperate need of a savior.
How reach
Christ followers can take gospel recordings and Bible portions to the Air Tuareg people during their festivals. It would be helpful if these people spoke French since that is a key trade language in Niger.
Pray for p g
Pray the festivals would flourish and become a means for outsiders to take Christian materials to the Air Tuareg people in Niger. Pray for the Lord to speak to Air Tuareg decision makers through dreams and visions. Pray for spiritual humility and a desire to come close to the Holy One.

Summary
The Kanuri tribes consist of the Yerwa Kanuri, the Manga Kanuri, and several other sub-tribes who mainly live in northeastern Nigeria. Some also live in Niger, Chad and Sudan. Most Kanuri farm and those who own horses gain prestige. Yerwa Kanuri in cities work in government, public service, construction, transportation and commerce. The Yerwa Kanuri who work in politics or religion have a high social status. Blacksmiths, well-diggers or butchers have a low social status. Their marriages and families need help in staying together, help that only the indwelling of the Holy Spirit can solve.
Obstacles
The Kanuri have been Muslims since the eleventh century, and they are dedicated to the Islamic religious system. As far as we know, Niger has no Yerwa Kanuri Christ followers.
Pray for p g
Pray for the Lord to heal Yerwa Kanuri marriages and lead them into the loving respect that encourages lasting unions. Pray for God to give dreams of the victorious, risen Christ to Yerwa Kanuri elders. Pray for a spiritual hunger among the Yerwa Kanuri that will lead them to seek and find Jesus Christ. Pray for the Lord to thrust out workers full of the Holy Spirit to lead the Yerwa Kanuri to the cross. Pray for a movement to Christ among all Kanuri subgroups.

Summary
The Tuareg are a Berber people consisting of many subgroups with different languages. The Asben Tuareg are a nomadic people, occupying large areas of desert and the Sahel. They have been Muslim for generations but have preserved many pre-Islamic traditions. Each Tuareg clan is made up of several family groups, led by their collective chief. In Tuareg society women do not traditionally wear the veil, whereas men do. Tuareg women have great freedom and participate in family and tribal decisions.
Obstacles
Christians among the Asben Tuareg face a relatively high level of persecution. This may instill fear in the Asben Tuareg as they begin following Christ.
How reach
Portions of the Bible have been translated to Tayart Tamajeq, the Asben Tuareg's primary language. Believers from around the world can support the distribution of these portions, along with funding the completion of the Tamajeq Bible.
Pray for church
Pray the Tuareg tribes will have abundant rainfall for their herds and crops as a testimony of God's love and power. Pray for peaceful relations with neighboring tribes, and with the governments of Niger and Mali.

Summary
In the 16th century, the Songhai Empire ruled in West Africa and the Dendi people can be traced back to these origins. The Dendi people live in West African countries such as Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Niger. While the Dendi were traditionally traders, they are currently known as maize, millet and plantain farmers. They also raise cattle, camels, sheep, goats and chickens. The Dendi are almost all Muslim. The New Testament has been translated into Dendi, but the vast majority have never had the opportunity to hear the gospel.
Obstacles
It is difficult for ambassadors of Christ to share the gospel in Niger. There are hardly any believers among the Dendi.
How reach
While it is difficult to reach the Dendi people, many of Jesus' parables speak into the lives of farmers and shepherds. Pray that these stories would connect with the hearts and minds of the Dendi.
Pray for p g
Pray for Christ's servants to make an impact on Dendi communities in Niger. Pray for the Lord to bless Dendi crops as a testimony of his power and goodness. Pray for a church planting movement among the Dendi people in Niger. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send additional laborers to join the few who are already working among the Dendi.

Summary
The Fulani were first seen as a people group in the Senegambia valley in the eleventh century. They travelled east and south of the Sahara Desert for about the next four hundred years. They have several subgroups, one of which is the Wodaabe people. The Wodaabe people are noted for their art and their unique traditions, such as beauty contests for the men.
Obstacles
The Wodaabe are noted for their taboos. Those who want to take Christ to them will need to be careful not to violate these if at all possible.
How reach
The Wodaabe are artistic and are famous for their dyed cloth. The women do the embroidery.
Pray for church
Pray that the few Wodaabe who follow Christ would be filled with the fruit and the power of the Holy Spirit so they can lead others to the cross.
Pray for p g
Pray for the Lord to thrust out workers who are willing to brave the harsh livestyle of Niger's Wodaabe people. Pray the Wodaabe people would be given a growing hunger to know truth, and that Jesus would reveal himself to them. Pray for Wodaabe people to become disciples of Christ who will make disciples of others.

Summary
The Tubu (or Toubou) are subdivided into two separate people, the Teda and Daza. They are believed to share a common origin, but now speak two distinct if clearly associated languages. Tubu life centers on their livestock. An individual's clan is very important to him. His clan has a reputed founder, a name, a symbol, and associated taboos. Though staunchly committed to Islam, the Daza Tubu incorporate some animism into their religious activities.
Obstacles
The Tubu are "staunchly committed to Islam."
How reach
Bible portions are available in the language of the Daza Tubu, as are the Jesus film and God's Story video. Workers are needed to take these to the people.
Pray for church
Although there may be no followers of Jesus among the Daza Tubu at present, please pray for those who will soon come to Christ. No near neighbor groups have large numbers of Christians. Pray there will be an increase of vision to see this entire region reached.
Pray for p g
The Daza Tubu are reputed to be quite poor. Pray for adequate rainfall for their crops and livestock, and pray for employment opportunities.

Summary
As farmers, the Bambara diet consists mainly of meat, rice, groundnuts, mangoes and yams. From the forests and bush, they gather wild seeds, fruits, kola nuts, shea nuts, and palm oil. Crafts, such as dyeing, woodworking and leather-working remain a part of Bambara life. The Bambara live in compact, permanent villages or towns. Their houses are rectangular with flat terraced roofs made of beaten earth. Each has an interior courtyard and an external wall of sun-dried brick. A number of these homes compose a village or town, which is normally divided into wards or quarters. In the center of almost every village is a baobab tree where the elders sit to judge disputes and make decisions.
Obstacles
Various Christian resources are available, but the number of believers is small. Urgent prayer is needed to reach the Bambara with the gospel of Christ.
How reach
The Bambara value Western education. Christ followers who are fluent in French and English can establish private schools where they teach valuable marketable skills and the ways of the master.
Pray for p g
Pray for the Lord to provide an abundant harvest for the Bambara as a demonstration of his goodness and power. Pray for a spiritual hunger that will drive the Bambara people into the loving arms of Jesus Christ. Pray for the Lord to thrust out loving ambassadors to the Bambara people in West Africa. Pray for an unstoppable movement to Christ among the Bambara people.

Summary
The chief characteristics of the Tuaregs (more politely called Tamacheqs) include the unity of their language, their alphabet, their complex social organization, and their class structure. They are divided into various subgroups such as the Hoggars. In direct contrast to Arab customs, the Tuareg men, rather than women, wear veils to show respect to foreigners and in-laws. Each Tamacheq tribe is governed by a chief and an assembly of adult males. Succession to headship is matrilineal (passed down through the lineage of the women).
Obstacles
Portions of the New Testament are reported to have been published in the Tamahaq and Tahaggart languages of the Hoggar people, but additional Christian resources are needed.
How reach
There are no followers of Christ among the Hoggar Tamacheqs, which means that they must hear the gospel from someone of another people group.
Pray for church
There are no followers of Christ among the Hoggar Tamacheqs, so pray this will soon change.
Pray for p g
Pray that the Holy Spirit will cut through all the confusion and fear of these dear people. Pray that conviction of sin, righteousness and judgment will permeate through all the Hoggar Tamacheq communities in Niger. Ask the Lord to send loving believers from others parts of Africa to Niger to share Jesus Christ with the Tamacheq tribes. Pray that God's favor will surround mission agencies focusing on the Tamacheq people.

Summary
The Kanuri people are an African ethnic group living largely in the lands of the former Bornu Empire. The Bilma are one of the subgroups of Kanuri. Following the downfall of the Kanem-Bornu Empire and the scramble for Africa in the 19th century, the Kanuri were divided under the rule of the British, French, and German African empires. The Kanuri became Muslims in the 11th century. Some folk beliefs and traditions are still practiced in conjunction with Islam. Charms and amulets are worn around the neck or in pockets for various reasons. There is a charm to ensure a good pregnancy for a mother. There is also one to keep the ghost of the dead from haunting its descendants.
Obstacles
No scripture is reported as available in the language of the Bilma Kanuri.
How reach
Please pray for Christian radio to be made widely available throughout Niger, and that the Kanuri will learn of its availability.
Pray for church
There very well may be no followers of Jesus among the Bilma Kanuri today, but there may be a few. Please pray for new believers among the Kanuri, that they will be protected from discouragement and doubt. They need fellowship with mature believers.
Pray for p g
Please pray for the Kanuri of Niger, that they will be drawn to Jesus (whom Muslims call Isa al-Masih) as the Koran is read and studied. Pray for an increasing interest in this man, a curiosity to find out more about him.

Summary
Up until the 1200s, the Kanembu were the most powerful people group south of the Sahara. They advanced their position by importing technology. Most Kanembu live in the desert region of northwestern Chad, just northeast of Lake Chad. Primarily farmers and stock breeders, many families keep small gardens in the fertile valleys or stream beds. The Kanembu have a stable social structure with each tribe having a tribal chief and religious leader. They often have large families.
Obstacles
The Islamic faith has long been the Kanembu's main religion. It may be difficult for new ideas to become more mainstream among them.
How reach
Though they are Islamic, many of their religious ideals are already very similar to those who follow Jesus. Emphasizing similarities, not differences, could be key to reaching this people group.
Pray for church
Pray that the church would find a way to thrive and that it would be accepted by the people. Pray that leaders would be raised up in their communities.
Pray for p g
Pray that the Kanembu both in Chad and Niger would have their needs met and thrive spiritually under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to soften the hearts of the Kanembu and lead them to the rock, who is Jesus. Ask the Lord to raise up a strong church planting movement among the Kanembu people in Niger and Chad.

Summary
The Tubu (or Toubou) society is clan-based, with each clan having certain oases, pastures and wells. Each clan has a name, a known founder, a symbol, and various taboos. Their livelihood is based on livestock production and on grain and date production in the various oases. Polygamy is allowed, but rarely practiced. They converted to Islam in the 1800s from an animistic background, and have included some animistic practices with their Islamic practices. They are considered to be a very tough, solitary mountain and desert people and have often clashed with neighboring groups. The largest population of Tubu are in northern Chad.
Obstacles
Access to this semi-nomadic people is difficult for more reasons than one. Outsiders will be viewed with some suspicion.
How reach
Much prayer is needed to prepare the hearts of the tribes in Niger to begin to yearn to know God in a personal way, through faith in his son Jesus. Pray the Lord will give them this desire. If they have the desire they will be interested in the gospel when it comes to them.
Pray for church
There are no known followers of Jesus among the Tubu people.
Pray for p g
Please pray the Lord will begin to awaken the Tubu to their great need for a Savior, someone who has the ability to forgive their sin and give them power to live this life victoriously. Jesus is this potential Savior.

Summary
Early in their history, Algerian Tamacheq people were involved in slave trading. Those who were not used as slaves were assimilated into Tamacheq society. This is one of the reasons they are sometimes despised by other people groups and given the derisive name, "Tuareg." These tough people are considered trouble-makers, sometimes for good reason, and sometimes out of prejudice.
Obstacles
Niger does not welcome Christian workers. Believers will need to find other ways to reach the Tamacheqs in this country.
How reach
Pray for the few existing believers to become mature in the faith, and be given a heart to share the gospel message with their friends.
Pray for church
Pray that the few Christian believers among the Tamacheqs will live exemplary lives and reveal the Lord's character through his Spirit.
Pray for p g
Pray for improved living conditions for the Tamacheqs, and for good schools for their children so they can be well prepared to live in the 21st century.

Summary
The Tasawaq cultivate date palms in and around the oasis town of Ingal in northwestern Niger. This is their primary occupation and a source of pride to them. For all the nomads in the region, (Tuareg, Arabs, Fulani and Igdalen) the town of Ingal and its surroundings is a meeting place for the annual "Cure Salee", a type of animal fair, family reunion, and rodeo all rolled into one. The town of Ingal has had a school for over forty years and a high percentage of children in town attend school. They speak their own language, named Tasawaq, but some of the people also speak Hausa. They are Muslim.
Obstacles
No scripture is reported to be available in the Tasawaq language, nor any other gospel resources. However, scripture is available in the Hausa language.
How reach
Please pray for gospel radio to be widely available throughout the country of Niger, in at least the major languages spoken. Pray the people will find these broadcasts and will be interested in listening. Pray the Lord will give them understanding.
Pray for church
There may be a few people in this tribe who follow Jesus Christ, but even this is questionable. Please pray for those who will one day come to know and worship Christ. Pray they will come to love him and his people.
Pray for p g
Thank the Lord that a school is available to the children of this tribe. Pray for effective teachers in the school, and that parents will understand the importance of sending their children to the school.

Summary
"Arabized" Tuareg are those who have adopted the Arabic language as their own. At least to this extent, they have become a part of Arab culture. Before French colonization, the Tuareg were organized into loose confederations, each consisting of a dozen or so tribes. Following the independence of African countries in the 1960s, Tuareg territory was artificially divided into modern nations: Niger, Mali, Algeria, Libya, and Burkina Faso. Each Tuareg clan is made up of several family groups, led by their collective chiefs.
Obstacles
The Tuareg tribes have strong tribal identity, and Islam is part of that self-identification.
How reach
Perhaps African believers will be burdened to carry the message of Christ to the Tuareg tribes. Pray that tribal animosities will be overcome.
Pray for church
Pray for the followers of Jesus soon to be found among the Tuareg tribes: that the Lord will send qualified pastors and teachers, that they will be zealous to follow Christ, and they will live holy lives in the power of the Lord's Spirit.
Pray for p g
Pray for the Tuareg tribes of Africa, that they will increasingly desire to know Jesus, the Son of God, deity. Pray He will reveal himself to them, and will send Christians to help them.

Summary
Libya has much potential to develop a strong economy, especially given how much oil they have. However, the nation is riddled with destructive militias. Instead of moving ahead with a more productive economy after the death of dictator Muammar Khaddafi, they are fighting among themselves for control. For this reason, many Libyans are fleeing to safer lands.
Obstacles
Islam and bitterness are two major spiritual obstacles. The Libyans have been fighting one another, often in the name of Islam.
How reach
It will take much prayer to break through the spiritual walls that separate Libyan Arabs in Niger from Jesus Christ. As it stands, there is very little chance for believers to even enter Niger.
Pray for church
There are no Libyan believers in Niger, so pray this will soon change.
Pray for p g
Pray for spiritual openness among Libyans in Niger that will lead them to the cross. Pray for Libyan leaders to have dreams and visions of the Savior that will cause them to give Him a chance to transform their lives and their communities. Pray for Libyans in Niger to form fellowships that are defined by discipleship, love, and obedience to the Risen Christ.
