Summary

Omani Arabs were among the first people in the Middle East to accept Islam. Most Omani belong to the Ibadi sect of Islam, one of the religion's oldest and most traditional branches. Ibadi principles of puritanism (including reverence for the text of the Koran) and idealism have greatly influenced Arabs in neighboring countries as well. Family ties and religious traditions are strong.

Obstacles

Omani Arabs are averse to change in general, especially when they think it could threaten cultural traditions. The Omani Arabs are strongly committed to Islam. To follow Jesus in this environment would be difficult, as it would break their traditions of “puritanism.”

Pray that a strong movement to Jesus would bring whole Omani families and communities into a rich experience of God's blessings. Pray for the Lord to send dreams and visions to Omani Arab family leaders, opening entire clans to the grace of God. Pray for the few followers of Christ among the Omani Arabs to find each other and fellowship together. Pray they would be faithful witnesses to the goodness of Christ to their family and friends.

Summary

Gulf Arabic is the dialect of Arabic spoken mainly in the eastern half of Saudi Arabia and the nearby smaller countries such as Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE. It is also spoken by some in Yemen and Oman, two countries that border Saudi Arabia. Most Omanis speak the Omani dialect of Arabic, though some speak Gulf Arabic. Oman is a rural and under-populated nation on the Arabian Peninsula. Their economy has grown considerably, partly because of the discovery of oil deposits.

Obstacles

The needs of the Omanis are mainly spiritual. They have very few chances to hear about the only Savior, and they have remained closed to ideas outside of their sect of Islam. Salvation by the grace of a sin-free Savior is a foreign and threatening concept

Radio broadcasts and sending them copies of the JESUS Film might help them to find their way to the cross.

Summary

There are many South Asian migrant communities in Oman, but the Bangladeshis are the largest, partly because they are willing to work for less than others. There are far more men than women among this migrant community. The Bangladeshis have their own school so their children can learn the language and culture of their people.

Obstacles

Oman is a country where very few stray from Islam. Bengali speakers there face pressure from within their community and outside their community to conform to Islamic ways.

Summary

The Mahra are divided into two main groups. The first group, the semi-nomads, can be found on the desert's edge in the far northeastern portion of Oman. During the winter grazing months, they stay out with their animals; and in the dry, summer months, they move into the villages. The second group, the settled Mahra, spend the year in small, semi-fortified villages, where they raise camels and goats. Some farming takes place in these villages. Social life is extremely important to the Mahra. They share a daily coffee time while sitting on the floor and planning the next day's activities. The Mahra are an endogamous tribe, which means that they only marry within a small social circle. In the past, marriages were arranged, but, increasingly, individual choice is becoming acceptable.

Obstacles

The Mahra in Oman are practically all Muslim. At present, there are very few Christian believers within their communities. A profession of faith in Jesus may cost a Mahra his family, his honor, his job, and sometimes his life.

How reach

Christ followers with veterinarian skills can earn a hearing among the highly unreached Mahra people by helping with their livestock.

Ask the Lord of the harvest to open the doors of Oman to the preaching of the gospel. Ask the Holy Spirit to call people who are willing to share the love of Christ with the Mahra. Pray that God will give Omani believers boldness to share Christ with their families and friends. Ask God to raise up an army of intercessors who will stand in the gap for the Mahra of Oman. Pray that strong local churches will be raised up among the Mahra.

Summary

The term "Urdu" does not adequately describe the Urdu people as such, but is merely a language distinction. Urdu-speaking Muslims are not an ethnic group in a strict sense, but are rather a collection of ethnic groups which have been widely dispersed geographically. They possess a sense of "group identity" based on language, cultural and historical factors. A majority of Urdu speakers live in Pakistan and the northern states of India. Urdu speakers are descendants of immigrants who were the "cream of society" in their own countries. Some are descendants of Arab merchants and soldiers. Others descended from Turks, Persians, and Pashtuns. Although the Urdu are all Muslims, this is no longer a strongly unifying factor. Since entire communities tended to migrate together, different Islamic sects of Urdu speakers are found in different countries.

Obstacles

Spiritual opposition can be expected as Jesus is presented to people. Workers should be prepared but not intimidated by this.

Perhaps the Urdu will learn of the availability of Jesus film downloads from the web, as well as scripture and other resources. Please pray they will desire to download and use these resources.

There are probably no followers today of Jesus among the Urdu speakers of Oman. Please pray the Lord will begin stirring the hearts of these people to find out more about Jesus (whom Muslims call Isa al-Masih). Pray for a curiosity so that when the Gospel comes it will be welcomed.

Summary

Many Iranians left their homeland to take advantage of the growing oil industry and the opportunities it offered them to improve their economic lives. Most Persians (Iranians) are Shia Muslims. They have a patrilineal society where men dominate the lives and decisions that their families make. Marriages are still arranged but only after the negotiations and approval of both sets of parents. The Lord is growing His church in Iran and hopefully He will do the same in Oman.

Obstacles

Iranians have been turning either to secularism or to Christ ever since the Iranian Revolution in 1979. In Oman, however, it's not socially acceptable for a Muslim to decide to follow Christ. This provides pushback to those who want the Savior to guide their lives.

How reach

Believers should befriend individual Persians and invite them into their home. They need to show them respect for their culture, but also share Christ.

Pray that God would raise up faithful intercessors for Persians in Oman and ask God to encourage former Persian Muslims who have come to Christ. Ask God to raise up a church planting movement among the Persians in Oman.

Summary

The Swahili-Arab people come from the east coast of Africa, mainly Zanzibar, Bagamoyo and Dar es Salaam. They are a mixture of Omani and some Yemeni Arabs who travelled to East Africa in the 1700s to establish trade with Europe, primarily in slaves. On the surface, Swahili-Arabs seem like regular Omanis. However, when one sits with them at a meal, the African roots come out. Much of the time, Swahili is spoken instead of Arabic, which is considered the trade language, and the food is much more African. They are Muslim, most following the Ibadi sect of Islam. According to locals, this sect is the most peaceful of the Islamic sects.

Obstacles

Access to the peoples of Oman by outsiders is somewhat difficult and there is a lack of Christian workers willing to make the attempt.

How reach

Christian radio has much potential to reach the peoples of the Arabian Peninsula with the gospel, including Swahili speakers.

There may be no followers of Jesus today among the Swahili of Oman but pray for those who will soon believe in Him. They will need mature believers to help them become well established in the faith.

Pray the Lord would create a growing desire in all the peoples of Oman to find forgiveness for their sin and for power to cope with the problems of this life. Only Jesus can provide these things. Pray Jesus would be revealed with power at the proper time.

Najdi is a tribe that straddles what we call Arabs and what we call Bedouins, so we call them Bedouin Arabs. The traditional homeland of the Bedouin Arabs is the Arabian Desert; however, some Bedouin groups have migrated north into the Negev Desert region. Oman was one of the first lands to be inhabited by the Bedouin, and today many Bedouin still live there, primarily raising sheep and goats. Nadji Bedouin Arabs have a relatively harsh existence. They have no permanent homes, but live in portable, black tents made from woven goat hair.

Obstacles

There is little or no Christian witness, nor any example of living Christianity for the Najdi Arabs to see or experience.

How reach

There is a need for missionaries who are willing and able to endure the severe conditions of the desert to reach them for Christ. They can use stories, poems and music that is appealing in their culture.

Pray for workers who are willing to endure hardships, learn a difficult language, and produce gospel materials for these people who need to hear good news. Summary

The Sindhi are one of India and Pakistan's oldest people groups. They believe their earliest ancestors came from the region where the Indus River flows into the Arabian Sea. They come from the Sindh region, which is presently part of Pakistan. With the partition of Pakistan from India in 1947, large number of Sindhi families moved to other parts of the world where the British once held power including Oman. Unlike the Hindu Sindhis who are often prosperous businessmen around the world, their Muslim counterparts often hold low-level or manual jobs. They are Sunni Muslims who have also been influenced by Sufism.

Obstacles

Oman is solidly Muslim, and so are the Sindhis in that country. There is no gospel witness for them.

How reach

The Sindhi language has all kinds of gospel materials including a complete Bible. Is it possible for someone to get them into Sindhi homes in Oman?

Pray that Sindhi people in Oman will be liberated by God's Holy Spirit from the many ties that bind them to lives devoid of Christ's blessings. Pray that Sindhi people will see past their respective traditional worship to the futility of it all and experience a growing desire to know the truth of God's Word. Pray for the Holy Spirit to anoint Sindhi families, especially the children and youth, and to raise up a new generation of fruitful, multiplying witnesses of Christ's mercy and love.

Summary

The Bahraini Arabs believe their ancestry goes back to Ishmael, the son of Abraham and Hagar, his wife's maid. They are the largest people group in Bahrain, which includes over 30 desert islands in the heart of the Persian Gulf. Some of them have migrated to Oman, another small nation on the Arabian Peninsula where the local people are solidly Muslim.

Obstacles

Bahraini Arabs have seen the excesses of Western "Christian" culture and they want to distance themselves from it.

How reach

Television and radio programs in their dialect of Arabic could serve to reach them about Christ. By being kind and sensitive we can slowly improve the Bahraini Arabs' view of Jesus' followers.

With only a tiny percent of them being followers of Christ, we must pray for them to stay strong and to live their lives for Jesus.

Pray for the Bahraini Arabs to have open hearts to the teachings of Christ and easy access to the JESUS Film. Pray for them to live fulfilling lives and to have all physical and spiritual needs met. Pray that Oman would be an incubator for a Bahraini Arab movement to Christ.

Summary

The Shihuh are fishermen and herdsmen and are probably descended from the original inhabitants of northern Oman, pushed into the mountains by successive Muslim and Portuguese invasions. The land in which they live is rocky and arid, with very little vegetation. Their stone houses are called bayt al qufl, which means "cave house", since they are partly underground. Until about the early 1970s, the tribe was isolated from the outside world. They did not trust outsiders, and it was common for visitors at that time to have stones thrown at them by tribesmen. Nowadays, the Shihu are no longer hostile to outsiders, but neither are they particularly friendly.

Much of the region is not hospitable to Christian outreach.

Much sustained prayer is needed to prepare hearts and to create desire to search for the peace found in Christ.

Summary

The Kumzari are located in northern Oman at the northernmost part of the Musandam Peninsula. They live primarily in the seacoast town of Kumzar and also in Khasab and Diba. Kumzari houses are built extremely close together. In fact, the only gap among the crowded houses is a narrow drainage channel for the village. The Kumzari are entirely Muslim, but they have their own type of folk Islam which combines Islam with their pre-Islamic practices. They believe in a she-devil who casts shadows and walks around in rags, carrying a basket. She is believed to cause miscarriages in pregnant women. They also are said to believe in monstrous creatures of various kinds.

Obstacles

The Kumzari can only be reached by boat or plane.

How reach

Pray for Christian radio to become available widely throughout Oman and even in the language of the Kumzari people. Pray the people would learn of these broadcasts and that the Lord would give them understanding as they listen.

Summary

The Harasi are a small, isolated tribe of Bedouins who raise camels and goats in the Jiddat il-Harasiis desert of central Oman. As modern-day nomads, most use SUVs to move their herds to seasonal grazing lands. They pride themselves on being robust and independent and having the ability to survive without much water.

Obstacles

Their seasonal movement and remote isolation make it difficult to share the gospel with the Harasi. In addition, they are followers of Islam. Many also practice Sufism and animism.

How reach

Some of the Harasi men work skilled positions in cities, returning to the desert for extended vacations during holiday seasons. If these men could be reached with the saving message of Christ, they could successfully carry the good news back to their families and tribe.

Pray for the Lord to raise up his chosen ambassadors to take the gospel to the Harasi. Pray for the hearts of the Harasi to be awakened to the truth and be receptive to the gift of God in Jesus. Pray for God to establish his church among the Harasi and for them to become a light to other nomadic tribes.

Summary

Bathari is a language of southern Oman, but few people speak Bathari. The remainder have switched to speaking Omani Arabic, Oman's trade language.

Obstacles

The Bathari people are Sunni Muslims who believe that Allah spoke through his prophet Mohammed and taught mankind how to live a righteous life through the Koran and the Hadith. They seek to live righteously according to Mohammed's teachings. They have never understood that they need a sinless savior.

One of the main holidays for Sunni Muslims is Eid al Adha, the celebration of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son to Allah. They already understand the value of the sacrifice of a son; this can be a connection to the ultimate sacrifice of the ultimate Son.

The Bathari people need to put their identity in Christ, especially as they are in the process of losing their identity as a distinct people group. Pray they would have a spiritual hunger that will open their hearts to the King of kings. Pray for workers who are driven by love and by the boldness of the Holy Spirit.
