Summary

The homeland of the Azeris was first conquered by the Persians in the sixth century BC. Islam was introduced into the area during the seventh century, AD. Azerbaijani settlements were traditionally divided into villages made up of extended families. In an attempt to protect their culture, marriage within the family was encouraged, often between cousins. Religious practices are less restrictive of women's activities than in some Muslim countries. Many women have jobs outside the home.

Obstacles

The Azeris have centuries of historical commitment to Islam, not easily changed.

Summary

When political leaders decide where borders lie, they often do not take into account the people who actually live in the land. Most Talysh people reside in southeastern Azerbaijan and northeastern Iran near the Caspian Sea. Smaller groups live in Russia and Kazakhstan. The Talysh are primarily farmers and craftsmen. They are especially known for weaving rugs, making jewelry and working with silk and felt products.

Obstacles

The Talysh have been Muslims for over 1,000 years and Islam is an integral part of their identity and culture. Becoming a believer in Christ could easily result in persecution by family and community.

How reach

Medical teams and humanitarian aid workers can help meet the physical needs of the Talysh. Christian radio programs in the Talysh language could encourage people to want to learn more about Jesus and the Bible.

Pray for church

Ask God to give the tiny number of Talysh believers opportunities to share the gospel with their friends and families. Pray the Lord would raise up Talysh pastors who can teach the Bible.

Pray for greater freedom to proclaim the gospel in Azerbaijan. Pray that the newly printed Talysh New Testament would reach the right people. Pray that each Talysh person would get the opportunity to hear about Jesus and that there would soon be a movement to Christ among them.

Summary

An enormous number of Kurds have assimilated into the local Azerbaijani culture, and most of them identify the Azeri language as their native tongue. Family is an essential part of Kurdish culture. The relationship between family members is close. The clan and community are more important than the individual in traditional Kurdish society. The Kurdish father is the traditional head of the home. The groom's family must pay a bride price to the relatives of the bride because she becomes officially part of the groom's family after the wedding. Traditionally a Kurdish man and woman in love could not marry without both their families' permission. A woman in Kurdistan was not considered an adult unless she was married and had children. In Azerbaijan a Kurdish woman may pursue a professional career and not marry.

Obstacles

Azerbaijan is very closed to Christian evangelism. It will take people who are wise as serpents and harmless as doves to reach the Kurds there.

There are many Christian materials in their language, and Iraq has a Kurdish Christian community.

Pray the Lord leads Azerbaijani and Iranian believers to build friendships with Kurds and tell them about their Savior. Pray that God creates a hunger for the Bible and spiritual truth in the hearts of the Kurdish people living in Azerbaijan. Summary

The Tsakhur call themselves Iiqhy but are generally known by the name of their largest village, Tsakhur. Tsakhur history is a rich tapestry of rugged beauty and communal identity, but one also beset with tragedy and a lack of grace. Originally, the Tsakhur lived in Russia's Daghestan, but during the thirteenth century, some of them moved north into Azerbaijan. The Tsakhur formerly belonged to tukhums, or family clusters with common male ancestors. Even though the importance of tukhums is less today, it is still undesirable to marry a person from a less honored family. Young Tsakhur choose their own marriage partners but still rely on the help of matchmakers. Weddings last two to five days and involve all relatives and villagers.

Obstacles

There is very little gospel witness in Azerbaijan, and almost all Tsakhur people are Sunni Muslim. It will be hard for them to give the Bible a chance to speak into their lives.

How reach

They are famous for their proverbs and love of wisdom. Perhaps sharing the Book of Proverbs with them while comparing them with Tsakhur proverbs would be a good way to open the door for the Bible.

Pray that in this decade many Tsakhur will be infused with Jesus' grace and the fruit of the Spirit, bringing unity and joy to their communities. Pray for bridges of respect and friendship from bearers of the gospel of Jesus to expand in the Tsakhur world in Azerbaijan. Pray for wide listening of an oral recording of the Gospel of Luke in Tsakhur finished in 2008, and for effective distribution of a brilliant audio version (2013) of the Book of Proverbs in Tsakhur.

Summary

Azerbaijan is an ethnically complex country where minority groups staunchly defend their traditional differences and struggle for local autonomy. The Tats are considered a closed society because they insist on maintaining ethnic purity by allowing marriage only within the tribe. Although the Azerbaijani Mussulman Tat have been an agricultural people from the beginning of their history, they have also developed a strong urban community. The rural Muslim Tats still live in their ancestral villages among the mountains and valleys. The availability of well water determines the village location.

Obstacles

There has been little evangelization among Muslim Tats because they are such a small group and because they live in hard to access places.

How reach

The JESUS Film is in the Tat language. Who will take it to them?

Pray for p g

Pray for Holy Spirit anointed workers to go to the Muslim Tats in Azerbaijan, and work among them until there is a movement to Christ. Pray for a spiritual hunger that will lead the Muslim Tats to the foot of the cross, so they can accept Christ's blood as the only atonement for sin. Pray for the Lord to provide an abundant grain harvest among the Muslim Tat as a testimony of his goodness and power.

Summary

Most modern buildings now have windows and are decorated with thick wool or felt carpets. Sheep and cattle production is the main occupation of the Rutul. Techniques for raising sheep have improved over the years, with better care administered during the long winter months. The herdsmen also grow spring and winter wheat, rye, barley, millet, and spelt (a hardy wheat). Traditional crafts include making pottery, leather footwear, and wool-based items such as cloth, felt, carpets and ornamented socks. Their beautiful wool carpets and ornamented socks are commercially produced. At one time marriages were arranged by the parents, primarily the fathers. A matchmaker often mediated between the families.

Obstacles

With so few Christ followers among the Rutul and among the Azerbaijani majority, few will have a chance to hear of the only savior.

How reach

These remote people need prayer! It will be very difficult to get the gospel to them in Azerbaijan.

Thank God that Scriptures are being translated into their language! Pray that the Rutul people will recognize the only Savior. Pray for spiritual openness to receive salvation by grace, and for this grace to spread throughout Rutul families and communities. Pray for the Lord to make a way for the gospel to move among the Rutul people. Pray for a Disciple Making Movement among the Rutuls both in Russia and Azerbaijan.

Summary

The word Kryz originates from the town of Kryz in the Kuba district. This people group's language is Kryts, which belongs to the Lezgin group of the Caucasian (Dagestan) languages. Almost every Kryz knows the Azerbaijanian language. Their children receive instruction utilizing the Kryts language at school. Their main occupation is cattle production, while farming is of secondary importance as a profession. Their trades are represented by carpet weaving and the manufacture of mats and patterned woolen items.

Obstacles

The Kryz need the chance to experience the abundant life exclusively available from Jesus Christ. Because of the region where the Kryz reside, they are heavily inspired by Islam, along with the other neighboring people groups nearby. Few Christ followers reside near the Kryz.

Pray for p g

Pray for biblical literature to be translated into the Kryts language. Pray also that God would give them receptivity towards accepting the message of Christ's atoning death for sin, which makes forgiveness possible. Pray that God will speak to you and your church about how you are called to help reach the Muslim community in this area. Pray for the Lord to orchestrate loving workers to visit, minister, and encourage the Kryz with the gospel truths.

Summary

The Shahsevan are a sub-ethnic group of Azerbaijanis, living near the border between Azerbaijan and Iran. They are semi-nomadic, being primarily shepherds. Their name means "lover of the Shah" or "adherents of the Shah," in reference to the traditional king of Persia. Most Shahsevan live in Iran, but there are about 2,000 residing in Azerbaijan.

Obstacles

As nomadic shepherds, their lives are very difficult by our standards. They must move their livestock to even find adequate water or grazing lands. Azerbaijan remains a politically volatile nation, and the people suffer in the turmoil. Cultural obstacles, and frames of reference, especially Islamic ones, obscure the gospel.

How reach

The Bible, GRN audio resource, the JESUS Film and other visual resources are available in the language of Shahsevan people in Azerbaijan. Many Shahsevan people live in poverty. Teaching life skills to improve quality of life are possible open doors for those who want to share Christ with them.

Pray for church

Pray that of the few believers in Azerbaijan, some of them will be Shahsevan. Pray the Lord will grant the Shahsevan people a growing desire to know Jesus Christ and to obey Him. Pray the Lord will open their spiritual eyes to see Jesus as He really is.

Pray for mature Christians to be sent to disciple them in His ways. Pray for healthy livestock that can sustain the people. Pray for parents to understand the importance of providing good schooling for their children so that the next generation will be prepared for the rapid changes of the 21st century.

Summary

Russian Jewish are ethnically Jewish, but speak Russian. During the time of the Soviet Union, some went from Russia to other Soviet Socialist Republics such as Azerbaijan. Most have moved to Israel. Few in number, they are still precious in the Lord's sight.

Obstacles

Russians used Christianity as an excuse to persecute their Jewish population. This has left a barrier between the Jewish population and the gospel of grace.

Pray for a spiritual hunger among Russian Jews that will lead them to the cross. Pray that God would grant Jewish believers favor as they share their faith in Christ with Jewish. Pray that strong local churches would be raised up in each Jewish community, particularly those in Azerbaijan.

Summary

The Jews in Azerbaijan believe they are descended from Jews taken captive by the Assyrians and displaced to the cities of the Medes. They spoke a dialect of Old Persian upon which the Azerbaijani Jewish Tat language is based. Because of their unique history and culture, the Jews of Azerbaijan have a strong sense of identity. Although they have much in common with other Jews around the world, they have a very distinctive lifestyle. Many of these Jews are Ashkenazim, descendants of Jews who inhabited the Germanic regions of Europe. After World War II, they lived in the Caucasus Mountains of the Soviet Union. Today, they are known as the “Mountain Jews,” scattered in the mountains of Azerbaijan. Some continue to follow the Law of Moses while others have intermarried with Muslims.

Obstacles

Reaching them will require overcoming entrenched religious systems and political and geographical barriers.

Pray for the Jews of Azerbaijan to be open to hearing about their Messiah. Pray for laborers, anointed by the Holy Spirit, who will invest themselves in reaching this precious people group. Their location presents a challenge. Scripture resources are available in their languages. Pray for radio and television outreach. Pray for workers willing to take these resources to the mountain villages. Pray they would see much fruit.

Summary

The Chechens in Azerbaijan span a variety of occupations and income levels. Most grow grains, vegetables or fruit; others work in oil refineries or are stockbreeders, particularly of fine-fleeced sheep. Chechen women work outside of their homes each day. People fear them because there are infamous Chechen-based organized crime syndicates. The core of Chechen society is the taip, a clan-like organization whose members descend from a common ancestor. Each taip is ruled by an assembly of elders with their own court. A network of taips reinforces their sense of being a people. The Chechen usually marry outside their own taips.

Obstacles

Chechens tie Islam with nationalism. Islam is not only the Chechen religion but also the foundation of their desire for independence from outside control.

How reach

Christ followers can take the savior to the Chechens by reaching their leaders. This takes time and patience, but that is how St. Patrick won Ireland to Christ in 15 years.

Pray for the Lord to work in Chechen society, leading them away from bitterness and rage, and into the freedom of forgiveness and mercy. Pray for a movement to Christ that will enrich the Chechen community both spiritually and economically. Pray for spiritual openness to Jesus Christ. Currently, their faith is in religious institutions. Pray for the Chechens in Azerbaijan to be blessed with an unstoppable movement to Christ.

Summary

The Meskhetian Turks originated in Georgia on the border with Turkey. They are named after a province called Meskheti. Though Turkic tribes had long since settled in Meskheti, it was the Turkish military expedition of 1578 that led to this people group being initially thought of as a separate people group. During the rule of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, the Meskhetian Turks were spread out throughout Central Asia. Most remain in these Central Asian nations, while some are in Turkey. They once had highly productive farms, but these were lost when they were moved during World War II. They are still feeling the effects from that time.

Obstacles

The Meskhetian Turks are Sunni Muslims with a small minority representation of Shia Muslims. They perform Muslim rituals, but they also have their own pre-Islamic practices which involve superstitions, sorcery and magic. Some wear amulets and "protective" talismans. All of these obstacles prevent these Turks from understanding the value of Jesus and how he is meant to take the only place as Lord of their lives.

To date, there are no known followers of Christ among this people group in Azerbaijan, so pray for an visit of the Holy Spirit in each of their communities. Pray that God would give new spiritual awareness to the Meskhetian Turks in all of the places they call home. Pray that new, positive relationships would begin between them and God's people. Pray that the Church would be intentional about reaching Meskhetian Turks. Pray for Meskhetian Turks in Azerbaijan to find the Lord, get discipled, and disciple others.

Summary

The Khinalug people have lived for many centuries in one village situated high in the mountains of Azerbaijan, near Sahdag peak in Quba district. Xinaliq village is located seventy km by road southwest of Quba town. It is the highest populated location in Azerbaijan, reaching an elevation of 2,500 m above sea level. Houses in the village are constructed of stone, with traditional flat earth-and-timber roofs which form terraces reached by wooden ladders from below or from the connecting streets above. Xinaliq village is famous for its unique language, which is native to no other location. Everyone currently living in Xinaliq village is ethnically Khinalug, except for a few women. The people of Xinaliq village are Sunni Muslim.

Summary

The Dargin come from a powerful ethnic tradition—indeed the very name 'Dargwa' means "strong, free communities." However, bondage to superstition, violent power struggles, pervasive male drunkenness, and other endemic forms of human sin, leave this proud collection of peoples far from free. Present-day Dagestan is beset by increasing cycles of violence which squelches trade, tourism, and economic well-being.

Obstacles

Islam brings a form of law, but not regenerative grace. The Dargin people have very little understanding of grace and mercy, especially as it relates to the Supreme Being. Like the other people groups in this Sunni Muslim part of the world, they are not open to new ideas.

How reach

At one time Muslim missionaries were able to penetrate the Caucasus Mountains and reach people who live in what is now Azerbaijan. Is there a reason why Christians can't do the same in the 21st century? There are also Dargin people who now live in the more accessible lowlands.

Thank God for the new believers among the Dargin people! Pray for their number to continually increase until there is a powerful church planting movement.
