Summary

The generosity of Sweden resulted in an influx of Iraqis applying to live there. Sweden takes in more than half of the Iraqi asylum seekers wanting to live in Europe. In 2006, Sweden allowed more protection to Iraqis than all the other EU countries put together. Because of so many of them coming to live in Sweden they are having to live in poor conditions. Many of the new Iraqi migrants are having to live in very crowded apartments, sometimes with as many as fifteen people.

Obstacles

Islam is the glue that keeps Muslim communities together when they leave Iraq.

How reach

Maybe because of all the distress, the Iraqi Christians could find the non-Iraqi Christians receptive to the gospel message. Sweden has freedom of religion, so Christ followers can tell Muslims about the savior.

Pray for p g

Pray for workers to go to the Iraqi Arab people, and for their hearts to be ready to receive their Savior. Pray for families of believers loving and serving others to grow reproducing churches. Pray for a chain reaction of families reaching families that results in thousands of new believers who share their faith with others. Pray for grace and truth expanding into their entire society as all believers learn to love others.

The Somali consider themselves warriors. They are a very individualistic people, sharply divided by clans. Fights often occur between the clans, resulting in many deaths. The results in recent decades have been tragic. Somalia is basically ungovernable, and their economy is in shambles. As many as are able flee to other parts of the world like Sweden.

Obstacles

Islam is a religious-political system that has been a part of the Somali identity since they embraced it in the 1550s. Being Muslim is well-ingrained in the Somali psyche, even those in Sweden. The Swedish majority is much more secular than Christian, which means that Somalis do not always have the chance to see living Christianity in action.

How reach

There is a large Muslim-background believer church in Sweden. Most of those who have embraced Christ are Iranians, Arabs or Kurds, but Somalis can hear the gospel from others from a Muslim background.

Pray that Somali believers in Sweden will walk in integrity and holiness. Pray that they will show Somalis and Swedes both that it is possible to live in the ways of Jesus.

Summary

Once spread throughout the regions they inhabited, various instances of ethnic cleansing and genocide have caused Bosniaks to flee to safety, especially in the 1990s. A notable Bosniak diaspora exists in a number of countries, including Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Turkey and the United States.

Obstacles

Bosniaks are no different than other Muslims in that they view Islam as a key part of their cultural foundation. Turning to various forms of Christianity is like joining the enemy.

How reach

The JESUS Film and a Bosnian Bible are available. There is even a children's Bible, filled with stories of Jesus. These can be personally shared with Bosniaks or downloaded from computers.

Pray for p g

Ask the Holy Spirit to soften the hearts of Bosniaks toward Christ followers so that they will be receptive to the gospel. Pray that God will grant wisdom and favor to the mission agencies that are currently working among Bosnians. Ask the Lord to call people who are willing to share Christ with Bosniaks. Ask God to encourage the few known Bosnian believers in this region. Ask the Lord to raise strong churches among Bosnians that will plant more churches.

Summary

Thailand provides the largest number of East Asian immigrants in Sweden. Many of the Central Thai people in Sweden are college students. Once there, they seldom have much social contact with the larger society. Others are women who marry Swedish men. The latter group often lives in the less desirable rural areas. Some Central Thai people in Sweden live in Stockholm and near university campuses.

Obstacles

No matter where they live, the Thai believe that “to be Thai is to be Buddhist.” They are polite, but not open to the ways of Jesus.

Christian families living near college campuses can invite Thai students to their homes for meals and game nights.

Summary

After the USSR dissolved in the 1990s, Muslim Tajiks fled their homeland of Tajikistan when the country was in transition. Many were well-educated and participated in public service and business. They swam or took precarious little boats across the Amu Darya River to Afghanistan, which was already ravaged by war. Since then, the Tajiks have realized that Afghanistan cannot be their new home, and now many of them are on the move again. Neighboring Pakistan and Iran are in no position to accept refugees, and these countries are deporting those who make it across their borders. Now many Tajiks are making the perilous journey across Iran, Turkey, and the Mediterranean Sea to Italy, and from there, to other European countries like Sweden.

Obstacles

Islam is a strong obstacle to the gospel. Muslims are taught at an early age that their religion holds all truth, and that they cannot leave it. Those who leave Islam often lose everything: their families, communities, and even their lives.

How reach

Tajiks tend to be spiritual people and are often open to at least a discussion of spiritual things. They understand the concept of sacrifice, which could be a redemptive analogy to the Lamb of God dying on the cross. However, almost all remain closed to the gospel. Perhaps they would be open to regular discussions about who Jesus is, a prophet they admire and revere.

The Lord is moving among Muslim communities in Sweden. Pray that the Holy Spirit will move among the Tajiks like a wave of refreshing water.

Pray for p g

Pray for Afghan Tajiks in Sweden to respond to the love of their Savior. Pray that believers reaching out to them would truly love one another in such a way that it will attract others to join Christ's family. Ask God to raise up long-term missionaries who will go to Sweden and share Christ with the Tajik. Pray that God will call out prayer teams to begin breaking up the soil through worship and intercession. Pray for a movement to Christ among Tajiks to begin in Sweden.

Summary

Sweden's Jewish population experienced antisemitism especially in the 1930s, when they were under the influence of the Nazis. Since that time, Swedes have learned to hate any form of racism. However, there are a large number of recently arrived Muslims, some of whom hold hostile feelings toward Jews. Sweden's Jewish population is urban and prosperous.

Obstacles

This people group has already faced so much and may not be open to accepting change. This is especially true of those they regard as Christians. It might take generations before Sweden's Jewish population can trust the general Christian population.

How reach

Many of Judaism's principles and beliefs are very similar to those of Christianity, and any outreach should focus on that.

Pray for p g

Pray that efforts to reach the Jews in Sweden would be conducted by those who love them and want them to thrive spiritually. Pray for Messianic Jews to present Jesus in a culturally appropriate way. Pray for a movement to Christ among Swedish Jews.

Summary

The Mandaeans are descendants of Jewish-Christian Gnostics (AD 150), and may be the only sect from late antiquity to identify themselves as Gnostics. Sometimes Mandaeans are called Christians of Saint John. Until recently, Mandaeans lived mainly in Iraq and Iran, but many have now fled Iraq and settled in other countries. "A very strange and singular people, in terms of their rituals, lives in the desert near Baghdad....they are a very simple people and they claim to possess a secret law of God, which they preserve in beautiful books." Ricoldo da Montecroce, c 1290. Mandaeism is based more on a common heritage than on any set of religious creeds and doctrines. They venerate John the Baptist, and baptism is their central sacrament.

Obstacles

After centuries of isolation the Mandaeans are quite insular and protective of their society and their religion. Christian resources are limited in their mother tongue.

How reach

Mandaens now reside in some western countries, and access is easier than in the past. Christians should reach out to befriend these people, and find out more about their culture, their religion, and their world view. There are likely bridges to this people given their ancient roots in Christianity.

There likely are no Christian believers among the Mandaeans, but pray those who will soon find Christ will be able to clearly understand the Good News of Christ, especially the grace He offers.

Summary

Tunisia has a large youth population that is highly educated. Almost two out of every three Arabs are under the age of 30. Both the Middle East and North Africa have the highest youth unemployment on the planet. Frustration, lack of opportunity, and government corruption produced a revolution in January 2011 resulting in the president fleeing the country and a regime change. We call the ripple effect in other Arabic speaking countries the Arab Spring. The aftermath of this time period is still being felt as Tunisians and other Arabic-speaking people are fleeing to Sweden and other countries to find work and safety.

Obstacles

Even for secularized Tunisian Arabs, Islam is part of their identity. Those who want to follow Christ must be very careful in the way they go about following Him so it doesn't appear too culturally "Christian." Most Tunisian Arab believers, even those in Europe, experience significant persecution from family and friends. They risk losing their place in their family and Muslim society. This is almost unbearable for someone who comes from a close family.

How reach

Most Muslims say they love Jesus, but few have heard his teachings. Resources in the various Arabic dialects are available and they can be distributed to Tunisian Arabs in Sweden where there is freedom of religion. Someone can do Bible studies with spiritually hungry Arabs, and lead them to the Savior.

Pray for church

Ask God to strengthen, encourage, and protect the Arabs who have decided to follow Christ in Sweden. Pray that these believers will be filled with the fruit of the Holy Spirit so they can draw Muslims to the Savior.

Pray for p g

Pray that the Tunisians in Sweden will hear and receive the gospel of Jesus Christ and the promise of salvation to those who believe in Him. May they have the joy of knowing they are secure in the embrace of Jesus. Ask the Lord to call people who are willing to reach out and share the love of Christ with Arabs in Sweden. Pray that God will raise up faithful intercessors who will stand in the gap for the Arabs in Sweden. Pray that the softening of their traditional Tunisian culture will create open doors for the gospel to be preached among them. Ask the Lord to raise up strong local churches among the Diaspora Arabs in Europe.

Summary

The Albanian have a small population compared with other Muslim groups in Sweden. More of them are applying to settle in Sweden each year because they want better economic opportunities than they have in Albania.

Obstacles

There are so few Albanians in Sweden that establishing any real ministry may be difficult. Establishing an Albanian Church in Sweden will require outsiders to learn their language and culture.

How reach

Radio and other media sources, along with existing believers, may be useful for outreach. Outsiders will need to train Albanian Christian believers how to disciple others in Christ's ways.

Pray that the Albanians in Sweden would have a strong community surrounding them. Pray that their basic needs would be met. Pray for the Lord to bless the Albanians spiritually and economically, so they will know that he is their provider. Pray for the Lord to thrust out loving ambassadors of Christ to the Albanians in Sweden.
