A good percentage of the Bengali speakers in Saudi Arabia are unskilled migrant workers. They are considered expendable labor; they are vulnerable to having their visas revoked. Still, jobs in Saudi Arabia provide needed income for thousands of Bangladeshi families. There are five Bengali-language schools in Saudi Arabia so their children can continue to learn the Bengali language and culture.

Urdu speakers who live and work in Saudi Arabia are not exactly a people group in the usual sense. They are collection of peoples from many countries who share the common language of Urdu. Some Urdu language users work at the highest level of Saudi society. Others are day laborers who do not read. All come to Saudi Arabia looking for economic opportunities. Bedouins typically follow a hierarchy of loyalties based on the closeness of kinship that runs from the nuclear family through the lineage, the tribe, and even to an entire ethnic or linguistic group. Disputes are settled, interests are pursued, and justice and order are maintained by means of this organizational framework. What is now Saudi Arabia is the birthplace of Islam and the Islamic prophet, Mohammed, who united Arabia under the banner of Islam and began to conquer lands as far west as Morocco and Spain and as far east as India. Summary

The name "Punjabi" is used to describe both those who speak Punjabi and those who reside in the Punjab region, which spans India and Pakistan. Punjabi is an Indo-European language that is divided into six main dialects. One of these is simply called Western Punjabi. The vast majority of Western Punjabi speakers in Pakistan and Afghanistan are Sunni Muslims, although a small minority of Hindus and Sikhs are also present within these communities. Though the language is still Western Punjabi, there are cultural differences between each of the three religious affiliations that speak this language. While the living conditions of the Punjabis differ greatly from country to country, they have retained much of their traditional culture and language. Conflicts between Punjabis usually involve "land, women, and water." This means they deem it necessary to control the means by which a person perpetuates his family and property.

Summary

The Rohingya people have been violently persecuted by the Myanmar government, which calls them "non-natives" because they are not Buddhists like the Burmese majority. Thousands had to flee for their lives. Some of them have gone to Saudi Arabia for refuge. The first Rohingyas went to Saudi Arabia in 1948, according to The National. These people have a much better chance of obtaining Saudi citizenship than those who came recently. Since they are not citizens, newly arriving Rohingya children cannot attend regular schools. They have to attend charity schools established by Saudi donors. Other Rohingyas have come to Saudi Arabia for erratic low-paying jobs provided by unethical employment agencies. Some take odd jobs.

Obstacles

The Rohingya people are almost all Sunni Muslims. Their hope is in the teachings of the Qur 'an and the Hadith, not in the person of Jesus Christ.

How reach

Outreach in Saudi Arabia is almost impossible. Pray that teams of intercessors will pray for the Rohingyas and other ethnic groups in this Islamic stronghold.

As far as we know there are no followers of Christ among the Rohingya people in Saudi Arabia. Pray for the Holy Spirit to move hundreds of them to enter His kingdom.

Pray for the Rohingya people to find safe refuge in Saudi Arabia and other nations. Pray for them to find jobs and schools. The Rohingya people have very little chance to hear that Jesus Christ offers them much more than they could ever imagine. Pray for the Rohingyas in Saudi Arabia to be reached by the Lord through dreams, visions, and through Christian materials on the Internet.

Summary

The name Swahili literally means "coast," and is the name traditionally given to several people groups that share a common culture, language (Swahili), and religion (Islam) living along the eastern coast of Africa. Today, the Swahili are scattered along eastern Africa and the Persian Gulf, from Saudi Arabia to Zambia. Though they are called "Swahili" by others, they prefer to be named according to their local settlements. For about 2,000 years, the backbone of the Swahili economy has been commerce. They worked as cross-national merchants trading spices, slaves, ivory, gold, and grain. Today, international commerce is still important to the Swahili but to a lesser degree. Many upper class Swahili now manage small businesses, do clerical work, and teach school. Since the Swahili are predominantly Muslim, Islamic practices play a large role in their daily activities. The central building in each town is the mosque.

Obstacles

Swahili have generally been staunch Muslims for generations, a tradition that partially defines them.

Perhaps the Swahili will learn of the possibility of scripture downloads from the web and will be curious enough to read these downloads on their computers or phones.

There are likely no followers of Jesus today among the Swahili of Saudi Arabia. Please pray the Lord will soon stir the hearts of many in this tribe to find out more about Jesus (whom Muslims call Isa al-Masih) as the Koran is read in the mosque. Summary

The peoples of India have managed to go to other parts of the world to make their mark, and Telegu speakers are no exception. Telegu refers to a Dravidian (southern Indian) language spoken mainly in India's states of Andhra Pradesh and Telegana, where it is the official language. This is a prosperous part of India, but some Telegus can make more money by going to Saudi Arabia. Telegu speakers in Saudi Arabia tend to live in Riyadh and other major cities.

Northern Yemenis who are residing in Saudi Arabia formerly lived in the northern mountains and northeastern deserts of Yemen, the poorest country in the Arab world. Yemen has a turbulent history of wars and conquests. Northern Yemeni Arabs are primarily located in the southwestern area of Saudi Arabia, across the Red Sea and the coast of Eritrea. Overpopulation, unemployment, drug abuse, unending political conflict and tribal rivalries have driven many to Saudi Arabia.

Obstacles

The Northern Yemeni have put their identity in the Islamic religious system. It will take the work of the Holy Spirit to get them to question what they have believed for many centuries.

Almost half of the Syrians in Saudi Arabia were there before the Syrian Civil War began. Those who are refugees are considered by the Saudi government to be "temporary" guest workers. Syrians who are in Saudi Arabia because of war are trying to deal with emotional traumas and serious losses of family, friends, jobs, and stability. Amid this they need to start new lives and find jobs. The more established Syrians are doing far better.

Summary

In Saudi Arabia Yemeni Arabs are likely to be common laborers, but there are also many who are professionals: Health workers, businessmen, teachers, etc. They can be deported at any time. Most of them are Sunni Muslim. Since Saudi Arabia is keenly involved with helping the Sunni Muslim faction in Yemen's civil war, they probably do not welcome Shia Muslims from that country into Saudi Arabia.

Obstacles

Yemeni Arabs are a Muslim people living in Saudi Arabia where Islamic theology is not questioned. The little they understand about Christianity is usually distorted, and few have heard why he is the only way to the father.

Pray for an end to foreign military intervention and blockades in Yemen. Pray for the Lord to use the instability in Yemen to help Muslim Yemenis to understand they need a holy Savior. Summary

The Tihami people are easily recognized by their colorful clothing, flowers in their hair and their large families since they love children. Although most live in Yemen, some live in Saudi Arabia as nomads and some as farmers. Like most peoples in this region, they are noted for their amazing hospitality. They are Muslim, a truly unreached people.

Obstacles

Like the Sudanese Arabs, the main obstacle to reaching them is that they are in Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Oman, all which are closed to mission efforts. Their other obstacle is nomadism, which makes it very difficult for outsiders to contact them. However, we must remember that someone took that effort to bring Islam to their communities.

They can be reached by various forms of media: radio, television, the Internet, Facebook and YouTube.

Pray that God would use media to reach them and that they would be prepared for a Christ encounter through dreams and visions. Pray for workers to prepare gospel messages for them in their own tongue. Pray for a Disciple Making Movement among the Tihami people that cannot be stopped by man's best efforts. Summary

The term "Hindi" does not adequately describe the ethnic and social complexity of these people, since it is merely a language distinction. In reality, Hindi-speaking Indians are a collection of ethnic and social groups widely dispersed around the world. It is usually the higher castes and educated people who leave India and migrate to other countries. These people now hold a wide variety of occupations, and in Saudi Arabia many are employed as domestic helpers. As is common among most migratory groups, Hindi speakers have tended to congregate where there are other Hindi speakers. Hindi speakers in Saudi Arabia are primarily Hindu, but there are also many Muslims among them.

Obstacles

The government and people of Saudi Arabia are strongly resistant to any efforts to evangelize in their country, although efforts directed toward expatriates may be tolerated.

How reach

Many expatriates in Saudi Arabia are Christians. Pray they will live attractive lives in the power of God's Spirit, which will bring honor to God among the Muslims and Hindus in the land.

Summary

The Sudanese Arabs' form of language differs from other Arabic speakers, and they have a history that dates far back while other Arabs in Sudan have a history that can only be traced to 1860. Sudanese Arabs are Sunni Muslims whose faith focuses on pilgrimage to saints' tombs as well as the pilgrimage to Mecca. It is also tinged with mysticism, thanks to Sufism. Their unique music is rooted in their pre-Islamic past. Urban Sudanese Arabs have migrated to Saudi Arabia to work in oil fields.

Obstacles

The biggest obstacle to reaching them is where they live: Saudi Arabia. It is the custodian to Islam's holiest shrine, the Kaaba, and home to Mohammed, founder of Islam. The government of Saudi Arabia is heavily invested in Islam as a religious institution.

How reach

It would be good to use satellite television and radio to reach them. This is possible thanks to SAT-7, Trans-World Radio, Far East Broadcasting and IBRA. Today, there are no known believers among the Sudanese in Saudi Arabia.

Summary

Most of the Omani Arabs living in Saudi Arabia are farmers. They live in villages or oasis settlements in homes made of stones or sun-dried mud. The farmers grow dates, melons, tomatoes and wheat. The Omani gather in the marketplaces to buy and sell and to socialize. They love to tell stories and recite poems or verses from the Koran.

Obstacles

Omanis were among the first people to embrace Islam. They are overwhelmingly Ibadi Muslims, a branch similar to Sunni Islam. The Ibadis favor the selection of their imams through consensus, not heritage. Some would describe the Ibadi sector of Islam as moderately conservative.

Omani Arabs may be attracted to the poetry and stories in the Old Testament as well as stories in the four gospels.

As far as we know, there are almost no followers of Christ among the Omani Arabs and no fellowships of believers no matter where they live.

Summary

The Javanese are among the largest, most powerful and most highly unreached people groups in Indonesia. However, the majority of them are Sunni Muslim and they are able to migrate to Saudi Arabia to work. During weddings and circumcision rituals they perform songs of praise to the prophet Mohammed which is compiled in a book called Silawatan. They also perform the kempling, a type of dance giving praise to Allah, during religious occasions.

Obstacles

The biggest obstacle is that they live in Saudi Arabia, a country that does not tolerate Christianity or any other spiritual belief.

There are Javanese believers from outside of Saudi Arabia who can reach them.

Pray that while they are in Saudi Arabia the Javanese would find the Islamic religious system wanting and seek to find true spiritual nourishment in Jesus Christ. Summary

Somalis originated in the horn of Africa, so they are very close to the Arabian Peninsula. Today, many live in Saudi Arabia, and most of those in Saudi Arabia live in urban centers. Traditionally, they are herders, and the more affluent have camels as well. The Somali men consider themselves "warriors," often leaving the women in charge of the herds so that they can train to become more effective fighters since fights are common, especially between different clans. They are Muslims, and they believe in evil spirits that bring sickness by possessing their victims.

Obstacles

Ministry obstacles include major illiteracy, inability to reach some because of their nomadic lifestyles, and strong allegiance to the Muslim religious system.

How reach

Outreach opportunities could involve literacy training for adults as well as for children; however, their language did not have written script until 1972, so few can read. Oral and visual means of sharing the gospel would be more effective with the Somalis.

Pray that this would be the decade when there is a massive spiritual breakthrough among Somalis in Saudi Arabia and Somalia. Pray for a spiritual hunger among Somalis that will drive them to seek and find the only Savior. Pray for Christ's ambassadors to reach the Somalis in both Saudi Arabia and Somalia.

Summary

Speakers of the Shehri language reside in southwest Oman, on the border with Yemen, which is a mountainous area. Historically, this area was the largest producer of frankincense in the world. The people are said to be increasingly bilingual in Dhofari Arabic, and the Ethnologue lists Shehri as a threatened language. A small number live in Saudi Arabia.

Obstacles

Ministry obstacles include their nomadic lifestyle, illiteracy and their lack of access to gospel materials. Additionally, there is tremendous community pressure for the Shahari people to remain true to Islam.

How reach

Outreach opportunities would include mobile health care units that can serve these nomads. The young people are seeking to improve their lives by moving to cities, so they might be reached in urban centers. Outreach workers could help the Shahari people manage their water resources while telling them about the One who promised living water.

Pray for p g

Pray for mission groups to specifically reach out to the young people in cities and start disciple making movements among them, with the hope that new believers will return to their nomadic roots and share Christ with others in Saudi Arabia. Pray for the youth of these tribes to be able to make needed adjustments to the rapidly changing world in Saudi Arabia. Please pray for gospel radio broadcasts to become available in Dhofari Arabic.

Summary

By the middle of the seventh century, Arab and Persian traders and merchants traveled to China in search of riches. These people are the ancestors of today's Hui. The Mandarin speaking Hui are still mainly in China, but they also have communities in Saudi Arabia and other business friendly countries where they continue to engage in commerce.

Obstacles

Saudi Arabia is a country where non-Muslim evangelism is not tolerated. The Hui are seldom open to anything but Islam in this Islamic stronghold.

Summary

The Javanese (Orang Jawa, "people of Java") originate from Central Java, Indonesia. They are a hospitable people, usually inviting visitors to share a meal with the family. Families are often quite large, some having between 10 and 17 children. Marriages are grand affairs that sometimes last up to three days. They are predominantly Sunni Muslims. During weddings and circumcision rituals they perform the jedur (songs of praise to the prophet Mohammed) which is compiled in a book called Silawatan. They also perform the kempling (a type of dance giving praise to Allah) during religious occasions.

Obstacles

The Javanese have a long and strong commitment to their present religion, which is part of their culture.

How reach

No doubt many of the Javanese in Saudi Arabia are living there for work. Pray that they will interact with the many workers in Saudi Arabia who follow Christ.

Summary

The Kabardians have been nearly exterminated many times over. They were involved in the Russo-Circassian wars that ended in 1864, which destroyed 90 percent of their population. Every Kabardian marriage ceremony involves the "tree of life," which represents their remarkable survival in modern times and hope for the future. They believe that hospitality must be extended to even strangers and that honor for their family elders must be demonstrated. On the other hand, blood revenge is a deeply ingrained cultural value.

Obstacles

The Kabardians have a fierce loyalty to their Muslim religious system. They are resistant to "strangers" who have historically taken advantage of them and threatened their very existence.

Caring believers can slowly develop loving relationships with Kabardians and find opportunities to share that Jesus loves them and has provided the way for them to be reconciled to our heavenly Father.

Pray for a Disciple Making Movement to take place with the Kabardians during the next ten years and for church planting movements to spring up, giving depth and spiritual maturity to all Kabardian believers. Summary

The Mahra people are few and they are scattered in three countries, including southeastern Saudi Arabia. They speak their own dialect of Arabic but they are not Arabs. They are semi-nomadic pastoralists who engage in some agriculture part of the year. The men have only one wife and they are Sunni Muslims, although they are probably not as devout as Saudi Arabs. As a society, they have social ranking and are led by a sheikh. They are a cultural minority.

Obstacles

The chief ministry obstacle is political; they live in Saudi Arabia and two Gulf states that have no freedom of religion. The second obstacle is their faith in the Islamic religious system rather than Christ. The third obstacle is nomadism, which makes it hard to reach them.

How reach

Satellite television and radio might be good ways to reach these nomads.

Pray that they would tune into Christian broadcasts on television and radio and open themselves to the gospel. Pray for Holy Spirit-driven dreams and visions of Jesus. Pray for the few believers to winsomely be witnesses of Jesus and that they would be prepared to answer questions concerning Him and visions and dreams of Him.
